Re: Gas Station

Here in California we have Stage 2 vapor recovery systems on the nozzles in most urban areas. My filling the tank is a two-handed affair, and I keep a pair of gloves in the trunk to help.

Re: I give up

This ought to be a clue that the problem is likely not carburetor. This sounds to me like a vacuum leak, not a fuel starvation (that would tend to be apparent under load, not at idle). Are you sure...

Re: 1930 Model “A” Fordor MANY upgrades for comfortable touring

Looking at the rear armrest, woodgrain and the cowl lights, I think this may be a Town Sedan. Can’t tell for sure because I can’t see the dome light: center mounted = Fordor, rear mounted = Town...

Re: rod nuts...why the odd size?

Be careful re: the guides. Standard Model A valves have a flair on the bottom for the valve keeper. You can’t pull the valve straight up after removing the keeper and spring like you can on a modern...

Re: rod nuts...why the odd size?

If someone knowledgeable thinks the knock might be valves, check to see if you have adjustable lifters. If not, then you might consider going the extra 10 yards and pulling the engine to install...

Re: rod nuts...why the odd size?

Last year I picked up 19/32” and 21/32” sockets off Amazon for very reasonable cost. Got into the engine and someone had already replaced those nuts with 5/8”. Go figure.

Re: Clutch chatter

Yup. When I purchased my ‘31 a couple of years ago it had ugly chatter. Upon examination I found one of the nuts on the bolt through the Float-a- Motor rubbers was about to fall off. That mount was...

Re: Different length rear axle shaft threads on either side?

Oops, I missed that. Ditto, try adding those thick washers.

Re: Different length rear axle shaft threads on either side?

You have an early hub and a late hub. They should fit similarly but this shows that “somebody’s been here before”, so nothing is off the table. On the weird side, either someone has turned down the...

Re: Which Side Mirror?

I also have a mirror on the right fender spare. I found when I put the seat back that I could not see the mirror, so I fabricated a longer stalk for it. Then I put a 4" fisheye lens...

Re: Which Side Mirror?

See attached. Snyders uses the Vintique number (A-17741-A), Mikes uses the same number without the dashes (A17741A), Bratton's uses a different number (24200), and Bert's uses yet a third number...

I got one from Brattons a few weeks ago and they still show them as “in stock”.

Re: Which Side Mirror?

I have the hinge mirrors on both sides of both of my sedans and love them (I had to mod one to fit the right side of the 31 slant). Not sure off the top of my head how the cabriolet door would differ...

Re: Shortened pitman arm

I acquired a shortened Pittman arm as part of a very weathered front suspension. The ball is quite badly pitted, and I can’t see installing it that way. Has anyone had any success filling badly...

Re: Did a 1929 Ford station wagon in California use passenger or commercial license p

Used to be that you could put a shell on a pickup and then it could be classified as a “house car” and get passenger plates. My understanding is that to do that now the “house car” must include a...

Re: 1930 Fordor Wood

You never really know what you have until you tear it down. I got real lucky on my ‘30, what minimal dicey wood I have can be corrected with epoxy.

Re: Adjusting Brake Rods

There is also an aftermarket gizmo available from the vendors (https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/product.htm?pid=977589&cat=41655) that attaches a spring to the motor mounts. I have Float-A-Motor...

Re: 1930 Fordor Wood

You can see the body cross members and the sill wood from underneath. Suggest a very thin probe to see if you can find rot. Another vulnerable place is the header, there might be a small opening at...

Re: Did a 1929 Ford station wagon in California use passenger or commercial license p

In the late 1960s I had a 29 station wagon with passenger car plates. It had been used by a campground in the Sierra Nevada mountains, presumably from when new. I suspect that had it had commercial...

Re: Dropping the oil pan

I had an engine in the car and dropped the oil pan to clean out the moderate sludge, then did likewise for the valve chamber. When I disassembled the engine a year later I found the oil channel to...
