You might be able to do it with a helper that knows what they're doing and understands that you value your car. I've done it, but it can be rather nerve wracking and imprecise!

A load leveler is a must. As said, remove the intake with carb. I bolted to the front and rear intake block bolt holes.

There is no rubber washer. The "piston stop" is a steel washer.

I too would just use bar and chain or heavy oil. You could put a dollop of regular grease in the pickup tube to stop drain out of the oil you add. I wouldn't use STP.

Yes I had fun doing it and very pleased with the results. I found that even being meticulous in setting the gaps with a set of go-no-go feelers, when I checked the dwell it was could be off by 5 or 6...
