F1 mirrors

2 Attachment(s)
Well, I got this mirror from Classic Haulers for my 50 F1 pick-up, took me a while to get to putting it on, then I found it doesn't fit.
Well the box says 35 to 47, so I called them, they said this is what's called for, I told them it doesn't fit, they said I needed to grind the door hinge, 1/4 off.
Is that crazy or what ?
I don't want to grind 1/8th off the top 1/8th off the bottom of the perfect door hinge.
Needless to say they wont take it back.
So the reason for this post, is I'm looking for a mirror that will fit the truck without grinding the hinge down,
Anyone have a original one they would part with ? or know where I can get one.
Iv posted and posted in the want adds, never any luck, just people trying to get rid of junk like what I have here.

Re: F1 mirrors

Maybe if you add metal top and bottom where it spans the hinge, then grind out the clearance you need? ..B.

Re: F1 mirrors

Original mirrors did not mount like the repro one you bought. Originals used a bracket that sandwiched the hinge and provided the mount for the mirror. The repro you bought looks better IMHO but yes grinding the hinge is what people have done.

If you look at the panel trucks in my albums you can see the mirror mounts on a couple of my trucks.

Re: F1 mirrors

I used the 1940 car mirrors and ground the inside of the mirror braket to fit. True they are not like the originals.

Elwood,I have the exact mirror and yes you do have to grind the hinge, then fit. I made a long pin .280 dia. to make sure everything lined up.The bracket that Gearhead spoke of is for the farm mirror. The actual hinge on a 47 is smaller, but you can use the arm on a 48-52.Take it slow grinding. Ken

Resurrecting an old thread for the same problem, but now the original ones appear to be discontinued.

Looking for an original style LH door mirror for a 1952 Canadian F1, which is already in paint, so grinding the hinge is not high on my list, can anyone suggest where to look for a good used one? Any help would be most appreciated!

I have an NOS RH mirror, but it's not what you're looking for.

My Dad used to drive several F-1's when I was young, and I still have all 4 of them, but I have never seen the mirrors that guys post used on actual old trucks. They were always like the mirror I have. They don't look as cool, but from my experience, they certainly seem more "authentic" to what was actually used by Ford.

When I did the 51 F1 for my friend I used the one for 47 and cut the lower pin ear off and just counted on the the positioning bolt to do the work of the bottom pin ear. Its been working fine for over twenty years and looks correct and clean. Tim

It's Vintique. Of course, it did not fit.

Cjshaker:

I’m not sure, but I believe that the bracket that mounts on the hinge is the only side specific part of the assembly, and that the arms and mirror itself will work on either side. Would you consider parting with the assembly and I could either fabricate or continue searching for the bracket? ( I have the right side bracket, which was on the truck when I dragged it home, the LH one was missing)

Thanks,

Chris

Re: F1 mirrors

You're right in that the bracket is the only side specific piece. Sending you a PM.

Re: F1 mirrors

I had located an original RH mirror for my F1 pickup. They are difficult to find as RH mirrors were an option used mostly on commercial vehicles. The one pictured has the correct clam shell for the hinge but the arm would have been shorter for a pickup, the one I had was extendable but without the support arms. They were reproduced at one time.....I would check with southsideobsolete.com to see if Fred has a NOS one.
