slippery wind wings Almost 1000 miles on my 29 since I got it and now I am having trouble keeping the wind wing glass in the clamps. I have been thru the re-clamo process 3 times now.
I find the knurled screw fittings to be of poor quality. They jam easily in their threaded holes so it is not easy to get the clamps tight before you tighten the screw. Maybe I've got it OK now, the 3rd time, but I'd be interested to know how those of you have solved this problem. Yes, the metal fittings are brand new a month ago. |
Re: slippery wind wings Passing on a tip from Phred: Try a dab of silicone glue-caulk. Buy the tube that says it is for metal and glass. Then, hold it -- or use masking tape to hold it in place while the bond sets up.

Re: slippery wind wings Go to a Auto glass business and buy a tube of black glue.. you must heat it up with a heat gun or a very good hair dryer. 3 years and not a thin hair of movement !!!! Once that shit is on...its on....

Re: slippery wind wings Iv'e used double sided industrial tape. It works 100%. Just cut the tape carefully around the clamp.

Re: slippery wind wings Thanks, guys for the good suggestions. Busy tomorrow but I'll get at it again on Thursday.

Re: slippery wind wings "3M Permanent Mounting Tape" is a 2 sided tape that has worked well for me for several years.

Re: slippery wind wings The stuff Larry mentions is what I used. Extremely sticky. I believe it is supposed to hold the plastic mouldings on the outside of cars.

Re: slippery wind wings There is a special glue for attaching modern mirror brackets to the inside of windshields.

Re: slippery wind wings I'll second the double-sided tape idea. My windwings almost came off twice, then I tried the tape and no problems since.
|
Re: slippery wind wings I cut a small pocket in the fixed side of the clamp and installed an O-ring.
Seems to have work great can't tell it was ever modified after re-assembly. Mark |
Re: slippery wind wings Lightly sandblast the areas on the glass might be an idea.
