A taller distributor for belt clearance ??

After reading this thread

After a few phone calls etc we made up two chevrolet conversions with a 1 inch taller profile. Hopefully this is another method of solving the belt clearance issue????

Bubba, you and I have traded e-mails. I am getting around the clearance problem using an idler pulley to bring the belt down under the distributor. What I have seen in trying to make the Chevy dizzy taller is that you run out of inside shaft length to go into the lower stabilizer fitting on what you previously called the Mercury type of timing cover. Are you making that shaft longer to make the taller housing?

You are correct , the shaft isn't long enough for lower support, however the two we made are what I call"exacts" meaning the Chevrolet housing is covered by a tube then machined to the exact size of the ford factory unit.hopefully it will fit and run with or without the lower support....
I do like the support cover but there's no load on the ford distributor and the support really needed unless you plan on running a magneto.

We might find the shaft will need a graft about half way up to use the support?

I offered a solution to this problem a few months ago. However I like the idea of a longer distributor, I have one that's ahalf inch longer for an HEI unit I made 20 years ago.

Mr Bubba
I assume you could machine the chevy early mallory to fit 8ba and have it sit higher that the 8ba mallory?.

If so ... is there enough shaft on the chevy to use it in the merc cover and still have it sit tall?

Bubba
I already have 2 of your dizzy's now I want a longer one for my next build.
I am squeezing an 8BA in a 31 coupe and do not want to cut the firewall.
After mocking up with new water pumps I will give you a call.

No the shaft is too short ,however we can do a shaft graft and make anything we need to fit the merc cover .
Its only money i guess????
And it s your money not mine..:)

Mallorys are not going to work even with an extra inch. I mocked it up and tried today.

This is a Chevy Mr mallory that Bubba modified for me to use with a flathead. It is not fully engaged and definatlly will not work.

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...ows/tight2.jpg

In this picture the Mallory is not even in all the way

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...ows/tight3.jpg

as you can see its not going to work, maybe one without the tach drive might work

Here is the regular bubba dizzy in my daily ride and as you can see add an inch and the belt can slide under there.

It looks like the fan will clear the dist …. yes?
It also looks like an idler on the back side of the belt would get it under easy.

Im wanting to run a gen mounted fan w 8ba dist in my
35 coupe.

8ba motor (motors done … don’t want to change cams)
Early heads

Iv got the 8ba mallory and a gen and fan on now and it (the fan) is very close to the dist but I have room to shim fan out a bit.

I previously posted this in another thread. Still smoothing up the idler pulley assembly opposite the distributor and going to use a larger diameter pulley on that side. I mount the alternator in the lowest position and will adjust the bigger pulley to take in the slack. This engine is a 59A with a cam adapter gear and Roberts gear cover.

Ford never made a DIZZY, they did however make distributors!

No disrespect intended, but the young'uns call them "dizzys". That term is here to stay if you expect the next generation to come on board. You have to admit, if they hadn't coined that phrase, you would have back in the day...

Re: A taller distributor for belt clearance ??

some of the problem with your set up bloody jack is that you have the early generator and water pumps causing the belt to ride closer to the block.

That's true, but we must solve ALL problems,or, there's many ways to skin a cat.
