Sounds like you might have some blow-by problems. To find out, remove the sponge and take a spin at highway speeds and then check signs of any oil blow-by,caused by worn pistons/rings. If so, you may see some oil on the outside of the tube and the surrounding area caused by pressure leaking from the combustion chamber, past the piston rings and pressurizing the crank case, causing oil vapor to escape from the breather tube. Also check the dipstick to be sure the oil pan is not over filled.

IMO, I think it is too restrictive. I would do away with the sponge. I had excess blow-by that resulted in a very dirty engine compartment and lots of elbow grease to keep it clean. I took a hint from previous posts and use an old white sock over the cap and breather tube. I change the sock about twice a year, more often if it gets saturated between oil changes.

You need a Fumaze or other breather tube to control that blowby and keep your engine cleaner..

Be sure anything you put in the breather pipe will still allow the engine to breathe. If you stuff the cap too tightly, the crankcase can pressurize and push extra oil out the rear main. I've seen it happen.

I have a black and white sock with a hole in it so that should satisfy everyone.

White socks are easy but the Fumaze is a tough find. Took me almost 2 years before I found one. Search the forums and you will find a post with pictures I did earlier.

In the wanted section "JOOP" has a want ad with picture and I believe if you do a search here you may come up with a photo as the FUMAZE has also been discussed at great length before as well as "sock" additions to the oil filler tube.

Bill Lee's comment about too restrictive and resulting oil out the rear main is well founded. A hard to find period accessory Fumaze is not the only answer to a clean engine compartment though. All the "A" parts vendors sell a knock-off of another style with a flex metal hose that will do the trick too. You may not need one at all. Another fix if you have only normal blow-by is to stuff a copper pot scrubber in the tube to catch and condense fine mist. Less restrictive than that cellulose sponge. Make sure you use a Copper scrubber, not a SS one. If a particle or two of copper get in the engine, no harm. SS will score things.

If you use a sock, use your wife's. Because when the sock is done, it is all soppy and goey to wear(:>)
