Toyota 5 speed
 

Recently I was told that the Toyota 5 speed can be adapted to out flathead. I was wondering if anyone has done this?

Yes, I bought one strapped to an 8BA with a 3x2 manifold and hot cam. It came out of a '52 Fordor from Australia that a friend of my brother owned, I was told it went really strong. I never got to find out though, had to sell it to fund another project.

Yes I run a toyota 5 speed in my 37 pickup, had it in there over 10 years.Cast iron box is a w50 all ali a w55.They can handle up to 300 odd horses so a flatty is never going to worry it.Cheers Tony.

I too have been in contact with a guy here in OZ who is running a flathead with a Celica 5 speed (a very good and strong gearbox). He told me he wouldn't use that model again as it is quite a long gearbox, and that he had/has trouble with the gear shifter coming out of the floor hard against the seat.

From memory the 5-speed was just bolted to the original '52 Ford transmission bell-housing.

Mike Davidson of flatatack racing products from South Australia makes the adapter and a lot of other really nice flathead products. I have one that I’m going to run in my 34 phaeton

I have one behind my blown 8BA in a 32 2W here in Melbourne AUS.

I used a cast iron 8BA bellhousing that required the bottom holes in the bell to be redrilled to suit the Toyota/Jap 5 speed.

I run a Heavy Duty Toyota clutch and the I have OD in 5th. Very nice !

I'm running a "cast-iron" case Celica box behind my 8BA & yes, the gearlever is a little further back than I prefer. It's not a big deal though & is smooth & pleasant to operate. We adapted the box using a plate & a pressed steel bell-housing. If I was doing it again, I'd probably use a Supra box & one of the Flatattack bell-housings. Previously I had a Celica box behind a strong 302 (in a '32 roadster) & stripped 5th gear accelerating up a long hill with a teardrop on the back (so too much torque is a definite problem!!), but no worries behind a flathead (well, my flathead anyway) :)

maybe there are several versions of the Toyota Overdrive, but I had a pickup 4 cylinder that was only something like .91 in OD. Our Lexus IS 300 is the same way, only drops the rpm about 300 in 5th. I would want the .72 overdrive if I went to that much trouble.

This is very interesting, it's nice to see there are other options for us hot rodders. I was talking to a fellow yesterday that is planning on using one, will have to check it out.

You also might try the website; www.flat-o.com Gene Benson makes T-5 & S-10 transmission adapters as well as the C-4 automatic trans. package for the flathead.

Besides the Celica what Toyota does this transmission come from?

Yup, not too proud of having a toymota 5 speed in our blown flat motored 37 coupe, but with a 3.5 diff and a early cast iron / aluminium celica 5 speed it is a nice cruiser.
We found a flathead gearbox that someone had already cut and just used the bell housing part as an adapter .Flathead clutch etc with the toyoa spline welded into the flatty clutch plate. Found a box with a reasonably forwar mounted stick. We drilld some new mounting holes in the old belhousing and it was a super easy swap.
