36/5W oil filter
 

Just had to know what that black vacumn looking cylinder was that is attached to frame next to steering column on the 36/5W for sale (for 47,500) Seller sez it is a factory oil filter ???? I never had seen one installed like that.

That oil filter was a dealer installed option through 1939. The entire canister was replaced with a new one when it came time to change the filter. Pretty rare item if complete with original hardware. Starting in 1940, Ford used the type of oil filter we are all most familar with.

Yep Ralph,just removed one from my 36,sold it and 6 extra filters to a fellow barner with all hoses and the extra rare bracket to install on head..Replacement filters were still availible from WIX as far as i know.Not cheap either were like $25 each 10 yrs ago.The setup is shown in the 36 factory accessorys booklet.Check it out. ken ct.:) Finding the hoses are a problem.

The same cannister filter is offered in the factory 37 accessory brochure as well. The photo shows one on a 37.

The oil feed line came off the back of the block next to the pressure sender and the return line had a banjo fitting on the end which replaced the outside fuel pump bolt to the fuel pump stand. The 37 stands, and maybe other years too, are drilled through on that side to allow the oil to piddle back down the stand into the block.

These cannister filters were also used on Ford commercial vehicles like trucks, buses and tractors. I have a couple of NOS filters in Ford tractor boxes. At the old Vintage Auto Parts store in Woodinville, WA years ago they had an NOS cannister filter setup for a V8 60. Its bracket was slightly different than the 85, but everything else the same.
