Gas Tank Neck Extension?

I see ads for the tank extension but I can’t figure out how it makes fueling easier.

Re: Gas Tank Neck Extension?

It provides enough of a rise to disable the nozzle from shutting off.

Re: Gas Tank Neck Extension?

Do you only install it when fueling or does the gas cap fit on it?

Only install it when refueling, there is no provision to install the cap on the extension.

It's useful here in the peoples republic of CA to hold the sealing ring of the vapor recovery nozzles back so you can get 2-3" more gas in the tank.
People in the free world with normal nozzles don't need them.
I saw a couple months ago the maker was going to retire from making more.

The vapor recovery seal can be held up with one hand while you are controlling the nozzle with the other. That way the gasoline will flow.

Which is in reality easier than the adapter. I get a kick out of the fact the underground fuel tanks that are collecting the fumes are still vented to the atmosphere. Usually pipes at roof level behind the station. They are as effective as CA "summer blend" gas that really only stops the emissions turning brown in the summer when the UV rays are the highest. The air is still bad but you've been scammed into paying higher prices for healthier air that really isn't.

Photochemical smog is a type of air pollution characterized by a brownish haze that forms in urban areas, primarily resulting from the reaction of sunlight with pollutants like nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It is often referred to as "Los Angeles-type" or summer smog, commonly appearing in sunny, warm, dry climates with high traffic density.

I would think one could make a temporary extension from a short piece of PVC pipe.

I use a pvc socket to male npt adapter. I'm away from home, so I don't know the size.

Probably not a good idea. The gas nozzle needs to be grounded to the car to prevent static electricity. Or maybe that why Ford installed a spark arrestor.

Ever wonder why modern cars still use metal filler necks?

Re: Gas Tank Neck Extension?

When you pump gas and the metal nozzle touches the tank it makes a ground path for static electricity, with a PVC adapter no path for static electricity, keep your free hand in contact with the gas tank opening and the pump nozzle . i was taught to keep the pump nozzle in contact with the tank opening refueling light planes at the local airport as a teenager . As an inquisitive kid I asked about the rubber hose and was told fuel hoses conduct electricity by wire embedded in the fuel hoses .

I hold up the California nanny collar with one hand, bridge the resulting spout across the tank making contact, then use the other hand to operate the handle. Much like NK notes above, but being sure to maintain a static ground path. Pretty easy to do once you’ve done it a couple of times.

Thing is, with the extension, you stick the nozzle in, start the pump and it shuts off automagically when full. Just like a Modern. That is the whole point of the extension.

I like the extension. Works great even in Cali. No gas spills and ez to use.

Re: Gas Tank Neck Extension?

Another benefit of the extension, you can't dent the top of the fuel tape ring which would case the cap not to seal...........thus a fuel leak when the tank is full.

We also had a alligator clip on a wire we had to unreel and connect to the airplane to make sure it was grounded.

BTW: for the last 15+ years Ford had used plastic fill necks - and tanks.
