Re: Head numbers help

Not sure if they are genuine Ford, but appear to be service replacement heads, judging from the late casting dates. The "40" prefix indicates heads for 1933 & 1934 V8.

That’s what I thought also

Re: Head numbers help

These are most likely service parts from Ford.

Re: Head numbers help

The 36 could have flat top or domed pistons. The 40- indicates the heads are for flat top. The part number suffix "B" indicates the heads are cast iron. The 40- heads were used into 35. There are many different heads used by Ford. Suggest you look in the V8 Club restoration book for 35-36 and it's updates on the club form.

Yes, many design changes were made in '35 / '36. However, only aluminum heads were installed upon the assembly line.

Re: Head numbers help

On the assumption your "36" is a car, Kube is correct in that all production car engines in 1936 came with aluminum heads. The 40-6049/50-B heads were available for flat-topped pistons as service replacements for the production aluminum versions.

The cast iron 40-6049/50-B were the standard production heads for trucks from 1934 through 1936, so they are correct for those vehicles.

The embossed date tags indicate the heads are made as service replacements. Mid-1930's production heads made by Ford do not have date tags.

Re: Head numbers help

Thank you all for this information. My '33 has the replacement heads then.

Kube - There are two pictures of the 40-6049-B head (looks like a duplicate photo) with a 10-1-48 date, and one picture of the 40-6050-B head with a 5-20-48 date.

I'm going blind... no other excuse. Well, maybe one more... I'm goofy in the head.
Thanks :)
