1951 Steering lower sector shaft seal It looks like the lower sector shaft has a seal that is pressed in. My question is how do I remove and replace it. Thanks
Also, on the ford barn is there a way to conduct a two or three word search, such as for sector shaft seal. If I put those three words in, the site seems to search for each individual word. |
Re: 1951 Steering lower sector shaft seal I use google. I would search….sector shaft seal Ford Barn….thats how I search for this site……..Mark

Re: 1951 Steering lower sector shaft seal Isn't there a qualifying phrase that you can use to limit the search to the Barn? Something like "Forum=The Ford Barn"? I seem to remember that it's a lot better than the native search.

Re: 1951 Steering lower sector shaft seal After removing the pitman arm (suggest a mark on the pitman and the end of the sector for reassembly) clean the face of the old seal and look for stamped markings as to Mfg. and part number. Then drill about three small holes in the face of the seal and insert small, long sheet metal screws part way into the holes. Pull on the heads of the screws to remove the seal.

The only thing I do slightly different is I use self-tapping screws. |
Re: 1951 Steering lower sector shaft seal Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: 1951 Steering lower sector shaft seal I must have a half dozen different slide hammers for seals. I changed a bunch of small tail rotor gearbox & turbine gearbox seals as well as sector shafts on old cars. If the lube leaks out, the the load bearing surfaces wear out too. It's best to nip it in the bud on this stuff. Some are more difficult than others so I have a lot of special tooling for the job.
