Flywheel limits
 

Guys could you please advise me the limits on how much you can machine of the face surface of flywheel the one I have has a groove in it.
The Flywheel came out of a 1948 ford pickup with a 10” clutch

Any advice will be appreciated, thank you in advance

Well the groove will probably not make a difference if it's a driver. Really.


Lighter flywheel is great for quick cars. Not great for cruisers really.


If the surface of the fly wheel is heat checked, it'll probably be fine with a light resurface.

I had a problem where the clutch disc was touching the flywheel bolts. If the flywheel were resurfaced it would make that worse.
Take too much off and you might get then same problem.
I don't know how much is too much.

There are a lot of flywheels out there . . . pretty much every one of us has a few stacked in the corner.

If you have any doubts about the resurfacing, bring it to a qualified engine machine shop and have them check it out. You might as well take a new clutch disk with you, along with the bolt plate and bolts - just in case they need to measure the distance to the flywheel bolts.

Posting some clear pics on this site might help us make a better judgement call.

G'Day Granny,
As Tinker has said a narrow,shallow grove won't worry a lot. The percentage of lost surface on a 10" plate is zip.I'ts a shame you are at the other end of the state as we machine all sorts of flywheels daily. I'm sure that you can find a good machine shop in your neck of the woods. Gary
