1951 Ford overdrive transmission identification?? 4 Attachment(s)
Hello all,
I am posting this for my dad. I bought in an eBay auction a '49-'50 OD and supposedly a '51 Ford overdrive. Could someone take a look at these pictures and let me know if it is indeed a '51? It's going to the shop on Monday to get rebuilt so I'd rather find out for sure before then!! If you need more pics, please let me know. This is supposed to go in a '51 Custom convertible. Many, many thanks. |

Pretty obvious that it's missing parts, yes. What I'm asking is if it indeed is a '51. This is measured from the front. Are parts still available to make this complete?
Thank you! |
Re: 1951 Ford overdrive transmission identification?? From what I'm seeing, yes, it is a '51....

Re: 1951 Ford overdrive transmission identification?? I discovered from a past search that the location of the rear mount to the frame on the 51 overdrive trans is not in the same location as the 49 and 50.

Re: 1951 Ford overdrive transmission identification?? Thanks again. Do you know if the convertible overdrive was any different than any of the other models that were produced? I guess the Vanpelt outfit can answer that.
Also, could the side plate arms from a '49/'50 work on the '51? Finally, what would a '49-'50 overdrive be worth? Untested. Thanks again. Quote:

Re: 1951 Ford overdrive transmission identification?? The convertible uses a different solenoid than the rest of the line. They are quite difficult to find. I seem to remember to have seen articles where someone has converted a regular solenoid for use in a convertible.

Re: 1951 Ford overdrive transmission identification?? The clutch mount on the left side is Ford just before swing pedals in 1952. It sets lower on the 1951 Ford and late 1951 Mercury transmissions than the 1949 or 50 Ford set up does. I can't see the rear trans mount since none of the photos show it. If it has diamond cut gears then it is definitely 1951 or later.
The convertible used the rocker contraption that fits underneath the transmission. http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/F...ngpawlassy.jpg |
Re: 1951 Ford overdrive transmission identification?? The 51 transmission had a different pitch on the gear teeth so don't mix the 49-50 gears with the 51 gears.

Re: 1951 Ford overdrive transmission identification?? While I cannot speak for subsequent years this is at least a 51 because it does not have the machined opening for the reverse lockout switch. I do not think you need the solenoid relocation mechanism on the 51 as quite a bit changed on the frame crossmember that ear due to the addition of the automatic transmission. If you do I have one I would part with.
