Advice and comments on my early ford pls Hi all – I had originally started this thread in the Model A section but was suggested that I also perhaps post here
I have recently acquired a modified 1928 Standard Coupe that was hot Rodded some back in the day - and as I am very new to early Fords I am trying to determine the year of many of the parts currently on it and learn more about the engine as well Any advice or comments very much appreciated Cheers Ron https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...=1#post1789263 |
Re: Advice and comments on my early ford pls pictures really help start the ID process. engine - trans-rear axle-front axle

Re: Advice and comments on my early ford pls Thanks Alan
There are links to the other threads w plenty of pictures - was trying to upload more here but ford barn wasn’t letting me or was some type of glitch |
Re: Advice and comments on my early ford pls Find a good, reliable dealer in Model A Parts. For years we depended on Ron Cloat for his knowledge and array of parts. Sadly, Ron is gone, but a good place to research parts is the Ford "Green Bible) which covers all Ford parts from 1928 thru 1948. You can get a copy from C&G (800) 266-0470 as FPS -3633, $59.00. It is commonly called the "Green Book", It is a "must" for all old Ford enthusiasts.

The photos.
The transmission number is early 1933 model production This is not correct, as pointed out below, I miscounted the digits!!!. The serial numbers were stamped into the transmissions and mated with an engine. When the assembly was installed in the vehicle that number was added to the frame and became the vehicle serial number. Because the engine is easy to separated from the transmission and were often rebuilt and switched out, the transmission number doesn't help much with the engine ID. |
Re: Advice and comments on my early ford pls Transmission is 1935 according to VanPelt’s chart
|
Re: Advice and comments on my early ford pls All '33 V8 engine numbers were six digits. Your transmission/engine number was used in July, 1935 production.

Thanks very much everyone - so it seems so far like a ‘35 trans with the ‘34 alum heads
Fan looks correct Has a Holley 94 carb Not sure yet what some of the other bits are ... |

Re: Advice and comments on my early ford pls looks like a 34 smooth intake manifold, and a 34 straight back fuel pump stand with the breather tube cut short...to me

Ok - so the cylinder heads are ‘-B’ so it appears they are the truck version
Why would they go with cast heads on trucks and aluminum on passenger cars? |

Hi all - another ‘ignorant’ question and thanks for your patience in advance
Here are photos of my front and rear wheels / brakes I was told the wheels were ‘40 ford wheels with front brakes from ‘40s and rear brakes circa ‘55 that came with the Monarch rear end - I am wanting to learn more about brakes so I can understand how to check these and repair as needed Embarrassing to ask this type of stuff – I am a partner in an architectural firm and know my trade inside and out but really out of my element when it comes to automobile mechanics – even the basics as you can clearly see - so starting to do a lot of reading on the basics but also asking here as I know many of you are deeply experienced in the ‘car craft’ and ford parts - so thank you for any input and advice Do I see a nipple on both front and rear - juice brakes? I seem to only be able to load one pic at a time ... so here is front wheel |
Re: Advice and comments on my early ford pls I’m working from an iPad and it doesn’t seem to like posting pics after the first one ... I’ll have to learn how to do this as well ....
|
Re: Advice and comments on my early ford pls Neat project. Running a 97strom would be closer to early year rodding (pre 39). but you have juice brakes.
Take pictures of the backing plates on the back and front. (the other side of the wheel you posted above) . |

Thanks Tinker - when I bought the engine with the car I was told it had a 97 carB on it ... either it was swapped out for the 94 or the seller was just mistaken - at some point in the future when I learn more about the proper parts I will get a Stromberg 97 and some other goodies for the engine too
Let’s see if I figured out the issue with posting pictures from the iPad – I think it was file size |
Re: Advice and comments on my early ford pls Nothing wrong with a holley94. I do run strombergs though 36/38. (38 should have a chandler-groves "first year holley" but that's a whole different story).
Square spindle, Front backing plate looks like a f100... i think . |

They are both cast. Trucks/big trucks always get the tougher less neat stuff. Years went longer also between changes. Replacement heads for the early fords were available and usually in iron. also had a A - B suffix. If i am remember correctly. . |
Re: Advice and comments on my early ford pls Front brakes are '46-'48 Ford Lockheed. The rears are Bendix type.
|
Re: Advice and comments on my early ford pls Thanks very much Rich - very interesting stuff!
