54 Merc light switch removal

Anyone have experience removing the light switch from a 54 Merc? Shop manual doesn't cover it. I can't figure out how to remove the rod from the switch or the knob from the rod so I can back the switch out of its cubby in the back of the dash.

Not familiar with a Merc switch (totally different from a Ford), but take a look under the knob and see if there is a set screw holding it. The chrome bezel may just twist off once the knob is removed.

Look at the picture here:https://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Mercur...del%3AMonterey The Merc has a much longer shaft but the switch works the same as a Ford you have to push in that spring loaded button and then pull the shaft to remove it.

as Jeff said you need to push that little button and pull.I have found it helped to push the button in then slowly pull the knob out you will feel the release as it engages it may take a few tries until you feel it then keep the button pushed in while pulling.then when you have the rod out it looks as if there is a nut looking piece that holds the switch in. actuality the nut is a bolt for lack of a better word turn it counter clockwise it will undo allowing switch to be removed. it will help to support switch while doing this.goes without saying disconnect the battery first:Dif original wiring be aware that it will be very brittle the wire itself should be okay but the insulation will fall apart.

Ah, got it. That little button is a bitch to get at, but once I was able to get my fat fingers in there so I could push in the spring-loaded button the rod came right out. Thanks guys.
