Ringing sound in engine Lately, I have heard what can best be described as a ringing sound coming from my 59 AB engine in my 46 Mercury. It is not a chirping sound--like from a belt. It sounds kind of like high pitched bells ringing. This isn't evident at idle but always happens when engine is revved or on a load. I've oiled my generator bearing & fan. Any ideas?

Re: Ringing sound in engine Well, we are entering the Holiday Season.
(Sorry, couldn't resist) |
Re: Ringing sound in engine Check the wear of the piston and condition of leather on the piston in the distributor. If the piston is loose it will vibrate in the bore and make a ringing sound.

Re: Ringing sound in engine loose bolt in flywheel?

Re: Ringing sound in engine Tube in fuel pump stand, that push rod goes through, has come loose and is bouncing up and down on the cam shaft. At least that was my jingle bells.

Re: Ringing sound in engine We are not talking detonation here are we, you said under load? Not too far advanced on your timing.. ? Sounds like pebbles shaking in a can ..

That is what sprang to my mind too....but there are some interesting possibilities being put forward. I particularly like Lawson's 'jingle bells'. So hard to diagnose these problems via a keyboard. |
Re: Ringing sound in engine "...........a ringing sound coming from my 59 AB engine"
Your cell phone isn't missing, is it ? |
Re: Ringing sound in engine I was once told about a valve seat coming out of the block and making a ringing sound...take it 4 what it's worth. The guy who told me seems to be honest.
Also, starter drive could be bumping the ring gear..???? |
Re: Ringing sound in engine One of the best ways to locate an odd engine sound is to use a length of small hose, such as for vacuum, and hold one end to your ear while you move the other end of the hose to different locations, The higher the pitch of a sound, the more difficult in finding the source. It is also a safer approach to working on a running engine.

Re: Ringing sound in engine Appreciate everybody replying. Some good ideas for me to follow up on. Thanks.

Re: Ringing sound in engine I have had the timing gear give a ringing sound in an 8ba. Tapped the oil filter return line into the top of the timing gear cover and the ringing stopped.

Re: Ringing sound in engine Try running without generator.

Re: Ringing sound in engine Continued thanks for ideas.

Re: Ringing sound in engine Finally got around to further investigation. Lawson Cox (see his post below) nailed it. The sleeve inside the fuel pump stand had come loose and was making contact with the pump rod.
