49 F-1 wheel cylinders
 

I'm not ready to delve too deep into my F-1 yet but one of the rear wheel cylinders is leaking pretty bad and I want to keep it drive-able. The question is this, the rear end is a 9 inch unit and I would suppose it was installed with all the brake hardware from the later truck? I don't even know if the backing plates and etc. are interchangeable from 49 to the later F100? So should I order parts for a 57 and later truck?:confused:

Eis and other brake manufacturers have a catalog of brake parts illistrations.
Not found on computer, to my experience. I looked at pictures to find wheel cylinders for Lincoln backing plates.

Old time type auto parts stores are a treasure trove of such information.

Use this as an addendum to brake drum diameter, shoes width.

And, yes, pictures don't tell all but it gives a place to start.

You may get by by putting in new wheel cylinder cups.

They are the same for a lot of years. Take the old cylinder with you and guess at a replacement and then compare them.

Be sure to match the piston diameter. Different bore sizes on the same axle will result in uneven braking.

Good advice above.

To answer one of your questions, I swapped backing plates from my 48 F1 onto a '63 9" rear end like it was made for it. All bolt holes lined up.

That's good info, mean's my truck could still have it's original backing-plates even with the 9 inch rear end.

I put a 9" in a 52 pickup for a friend. He had a recent brake job on the old rear end ,so I moved all the brakes from the original rear end to the 9". As I recall I used the 9" backing plates, but I think the early backing plates may have also bolted up to the 9".

The brakes on these are very similar up into the 70s at least.

Somewhere in the mid-60's the rear brakes on 9" went from 2" wide to 2-1/2". You can't use the Dana 44 brakes on those axles.

Thanks everyone for all the good info. I was looking around NAPA's web-site, I looked up 49 and 57 rear cylinders, they look very similar, maybe they would even interchange? I should be able to go pull it off in the next few days and have a good look.

BTW, did some investigation on the 9 inch and it appears to be a very early one.

The wheel cylinders I use on the front are 1 1/16 bore:

NAPA (R) UP9091 / (L) UP9090 F1 48-52 & F100 53-60

or

Centric (R) 13468012 / (L) 13468011 F1 48-52 & F100 53-67

I am sure these wheel cylinders fit a lot of other models and years, these are just the listings I have.

I am using 15/16 bore wheel cylinders on the rear (9 in):

Raybestos (R) WC370192 / (L) WC370193 F Series (and many others) from 73 on up through the 90s and other Ford lines from 52 up. There are a 160 pages of vehicles this cylinder fits.

Good news along with the bad. Things look pretty new-ish in there. All the hardware is new, the drums are new and the linings look fresh. The cylinder looks new also, the PO must have installed the new cylinders and didn't flush out the fluid very well and left a bunch of water in the system.

Are the shoes soaked? If not, don't reinvent the wheel, throw in a new wheel cylinder to match and drive it!
