Arturo's 48 more door
 

A few months ago I had the privilege of inheriting this 48' from my great uncle (my Grandfathers brother). My uncle has always been a collector of fine automobiles. It's a beautiful car and a great driver. It's a real privilege to be the next caretaker of this car. I thought you all might enjoy a few pictures of it.

I have a soft spot for "more doors" they were the staple US sourced Ford available here in NZ.

Can you explain this to us non-six cylinder people? I always thought the the "G" 6 cylinder motors were '41-'48 and they went to "H" series in 1949.

Specifications of the 2 very different Six Cylinder Ford Motors.

The “G” series engine was still very Ford-like. The “H” series engine was almost a copy of a Plymouth, Pontiac, or Studebaker six. If you can, refer, for example, to pages 210-213 in the “Green Bible” (Chassis Parts and Accessories Catalogue, Passenger Cars 1928 thru 1948 and Trucks 1928 thru 1947).

Both were L-Head engines and both used timing gears rather than the timing chain used on the Plymouth and Pontiac sixes.

Split valve guides retained by horse shoe clip
“H” Series

The following information was copy/pasted from the VanPelt website. This and other sites I used when rebuilding my motor (42 G six cylinder) is where I came to the conclusion I did.

The original G Series engine was used in Ford Special, Ford Deluxe, and Ford Super Deluxe passenger cars. It was also used in Ford Commercial and Truck models (except COE - cab over engine). The engine was rated at 90hp at 3300 rpm.

The first two years (1941 to 42) models used Holley single barrel carburetors (1GA-9510-A). The 1946 to 47 models used the Holley single barrel carburetor (5GA-9510-A).

In late September 1947 Ford changed the six cylinder engine to the H Series which had the same bore/stroke and displacement of the earlier G Series engine from 1941 to 1947. The newer engine had slightly higher compression and the new "Loadamatic" type distributor. 1951 was the last production year for the flathead six as Ford introduced the new over-head valve six for 1952. Other changes include larger main bearing journals, new rotor type oil pump, newer Holley carburetor (8HA-9510-A), new water pump, and one-piece valve guides. In early 1950 the camshaft was changed. Otherwise, the basic engine remained similar to the G Series design of '41 to '47. The block and head were of cast iron with the valves located in the block. The newer version gained 5hp over the G Series. The engine is easily distinguished from the G Series by distributor location....the new Loadamatic distributor is mounted to the left side of the cylinder block near the middle of the engine.

Now with all that said, I have a firm belief Ford used up old stock until it ran out. That being said I wish to re-cant my statement the motor may not be original. My 42 has a tag on the seat that says its was from a run made for the 41. If thats an early 48 it just may be possible (my opinion) that motor is original. My apologies to elturo, that is one fine looking car and the family tie just makes it that much more special.

Woah! A kissin' cousin to Old Henry for sure. Beautiful car! Hope you have as much fun with it as I do with Old Henry, also a family heirloom. These cars love the open road.

I hate that term Old Henry........my ex wife ran off with her cousin from Holland :mad: (:)) but I agree with you beautiful car. Fordoors really do not get the accolades they deserve. In NZ in hot rodding circles they are known as a "ford house", lots of door and windows....big enough to live in or at least hold a party.
