Looking for a little info 49 Pickup

I'm looking to add some company for my 30 coupe, and have takin' a liking to a 49 1/2 ton. Are the seats adjustable? Leg room for 6ft 2?

Re: Looking for a little info 49 Pickup

I've got the same truck basically. The seat does slide.
Mine is all the way back against the gas tank. I'm 5'8"
and it's comfortable. The guy I got it from was around
6' 2" or so and he was comfortable.
If you wanted a bit more legroom than having the seat
all the way back, you'd probably have to delete the
gas tank and move it to under the bed.
Headroom may or may not be an issue. I have about
6" to the headliner.

This is not specific to the 49 but old pick-ups in general, the seat back is too vertical and the angle is made worse by sliding the seat bottom aft. It may affect your comfort level.

If you are comfortable in your 30 coupe you should have no problems with the 49.
I am 6'-0" and things are a little tight in my 41. I agree with the comment about the seat and find the size of the steering wheel is also a factor.

Doesn't appear to be any special group dedicated to the F1 series. Is there another website you'd recommend? A buying guide of some kind would be helpful.

Re: Looking for a little info 49 Pickup

While many have made the tank swap for 'more' seat room, I'm not convinced on the value. Considering that the stock seat is fairly vertical and already uses every bit of the avaiable cab space, changing might shift the geometry but can't create new space. I'm 6'2" and don't have any head or confort issues. Your fit may vary.

On the sites, take a look at the 48-56 forum at Ford Truck Enthusiasts (ford-trucks.com). Good group, very accepting, and active.

I'm on Ford Truck Enthusiasts occasionally. I don't
think it's as good as this forum, even though there isn't
a dedicated F-1 section here.

The first time I saw that bed tank design it was in the
Classic Haulers catalog...... They're now pretty much
handled by Mid-Fifties.

There's a few variations out there on this theme, including one where a section of the bed panel flips up, allowing access to the gas fill neck, etc.

I can't direct you exactly because it's not on my "pending projects" list, but some pretty
clever stuff is available.

Re: Looking for a little info 49 Pickup

I'm 6' even and with the seat fully back on my '49 I'm comfortable, but the bigger problem is that the gas pedal is too vertical so I end up just operating it with my toe.

I owned a 65 F-100 that I installed a 302 in. I replaced the accelerator pedal with something else, might have been from the same donor car. Was more of a full-floating style that operated with a cable. Maybe something like that would work better in the '49? Model A's have a funny kind of gas pedal, not very comfortable either, but you get used to it.

Re: Looking for a little info 49 Pickup

There are a few of us here that focus on trucks. In my opinion, you'll get better info here than some other forums because there you have to sort out the real stuff from the junk that gets posted by guys who are in competition for post counts.

You got honest info on this thread...

Just beware, you buy one and others will follow it home! ;)

So then, where are the normal rust-out spots to look for?
