Power steering - 1954 Hello, I have a 54 Ford & would like to convert to power steering. What years of p.s. systems will adapt easily to the 54? I am sure many have done this before. Alternately, does annyone have a spare p.s. setup for sale? Thank you

Re: Power steering - 1954 There is an article in Y Block magazine this past issue about installing a modern ford power steering box in a 56 Ford. But if you are not a mechanic and the motor is still in it's not a job for a novice. Might also plan if you found a set up complete might be 1000.00 to 1,500.00 it depends on who, and what shape it's in. Good luck Gerry

Re: Power steering - 1954 There are serval that will bolt on. A reworked integral PS unit made to fit a 55 Chev can be made to work, but only if you have an automtic trans. The clutch likage wont fit with that unit on. There are rack and pinion systems available, but they work best with a different engine. With a Y block, the oil pump, oil filter, clutch linage and steering head all need the same space. The stock systems are still out there, dont giv eup. It took me years to find mine.

Re: Power steering - 1954 Granada/Monarch P/S system is almost identical to a 54-56 setup. Just needs a minor change at the idler arm location.

Re: Power steering - 1954 Parklane I remember seeing a write up on this. Mabe at the Y Block Forever site. Was writen up in CVA I think Writen by the late Dick Cohen, will have to look for it, that was a much easier and much less expensive set up. Gerry

Re: Power steering - 1954 I just finished installing the Borgeson unit in my 54 sedan. It is a great box and small enough to let me retain the column shift. The results are fantastic. I used to have to chase the car all over the road because of a sloppy box but now it is easy to keep straight and the turning is very easy. I highly recommend them although their coupler uses a set screw that rubs the inside of the steering column. It must be shortened so that it is almost flush with the coupler.

Re: Power steering - 1954 Jack, Why not just get a stock 1954 setup and do an easy install, no modifications. They are out there and correct and work just fine.

Re: Power steering - 1954 The stock 54 power steering is a ram assist. I wanted a fresh box and frankly the ram assist has its problems. Trust me, installing the Borgeson kit is the way to go.

Re: Power steering - 1954 Stacks, can you share any information and photos on what you did for column supports (dash and floor) and did you do anything different for the large firewall hole? What pump did you end up running, ford, borgeson or saginaw?
I have the borgeson box mounted and I have a late 60's Pontiac tilt column I am shortening to mate with mine. You may have ended up with the factory dash mount for the column but mine will take some fab work as the column is thicker in diameter than the stock one. I am thinking I need some floor support and I am planning to fill the factory firewall hole and cutout whats needed for the new column install and figure out a way to seal it up good. Quote:

I was able to use the original tin at the firewall but did buy a new rubber seal from C&G Ford Parts. Having a larger diameter column will work in your favor as the original Ford one will not fit over the Borgeson box.
I am using a Volvo electric pump to run my power steering. This is because it is somewhat trick and also I could not find a place to mount a pump on my 223 inline 6 engine. The electric pump works great. |
