Muffler sounds 1 Attachment(s)
Which mufflers have the softer sounds on a 35 PU with a rebuilt 59A and dual exhausts ?. steel pack of fiberglass, 17" or 22" and does the size of the exhaust pipes make any noticeable difference. Looking for the 1950's rumble. Also want to be able to hear the dog bark from the passenger side
Thanks |
Re: Muffler sounds A lot of people think the 1 3/4 sound the best and it is a noticeable difference.

Re: Muffler sounds How big is the dog?glass packs, mellow, steel packs, not so mellow.Smithys ok ,Brockman, the best! I have both.Phil

Re: Muffler sounds I'm also interested in this subject. My 59AB came with "aged" Smitty's with stock headers using the good old fashioned dual exhaust conversion kit and small pipes. Although they sound "nice" (that 50's sound) especially when one steps on the gas at lower speeds, the Smitty's are a bit loud for my personal taste. My grand kids never rode in a car like this and they are fine with it but its a bit annoying to adults especially during an extended drive.
I will be installing glass-packs and judging from posts on related threads, it sounds like Brockman's would be a good choice. Any other brands suggested ? |
Re: Muffler sounds Hmmm..... I have 22" Smithys and they're too quiet. They have an arrow on them showing which direction they go, so I cut them off and turned them round. However it made no difference. All that work and welding for no improvement. Grrr.

Re: Muffler sounds Gross generalization:
Fiberglass will be more muffled and muted (softer) than steel pack Longer mufflers will be more muffled and muted than shorter Fiberglass will eventually burn/blow out and get louder and harsher with time... |
Re: Muffler sounds Quote:
It's to insure that exhaust gasses etc. are not being blown into the open end of the internal louvers, causing early breakdown of the fiberglass packing. |
Re: Muffler sounds I have Smithys. Love the sound. To me it is just right.

Re: Muffler sounds I don't run mufflers. It's not loud. Just put in an equalizer pipe.
