296 flathead , 48 strombergs.
 

We are building a 296 flathead and wish to keep the same Eddie Meyer twin hi rise manifold. What are the thoughts on running two 48 strombergs over two 97 strombergs. Before you say run 3 carbs , we want to keep the same look we have at present.

I'm building a very similar combination for a hot street car (but 284 cubes). It is a heavily ported engine, 1.72" intakes, big roller cam , etc - really a total race motor (but not big on cubes) . . . I can't help myself!

The 48's are a bit bigger than the 97's - which is why I'm giving them a try. To me, the bigger issue is the design of the early EM manifold - probably isn't going to make much of a difference which carbs you run (I'm doing the same thing, original EM manifold of the same design).

Just for the heck of it, I'm going to put my car on a chassis dyno and screw around with a set of 97's, 48's and Holley 2110's (probably what we both really need). I'll also port the EM manifold and see if I can improve the flow.

My guess is that I'll see very minimal differences between all three sets of carbs - but what the heck, will be fun to have some REAL numbers to share!

The vintage manifold doesn't match the modern heads.

Ha but it's what you can't see, it has an Cam techniques L100 cam , and this motor is going in another 32 we are building, and the new motor will have the "kiwi-L100 " cam we purchased off you.looking forward to hearing it rumble.

Stock bodied all original 32 3W a hot rod for longer than it's been stock. all old ford or aftermarket ford parts, in essence a vintage hot rod , in our eyes anyway,

There will be almost no performance difference from the 97 to the 48. Use whatever you have. As previously written about---for best results you need more on a different intake.

I am running a 48 in the middle with the outer 97's dummied up on a .060 over 8BA Ford crank. With the original PV and jets it was way rich so I jetted it down as per Uncle Max's recommendations. So, with two, I think you might be rich if they are jetted stock. My 2 cents worth.

The 294/L-100 is running again and has over 1000 miles on it now. We have uncle max 97's at each end and a 48 in the middle. After Richard did his tune up the truck will light em up with a rolling start on just the 48, very impressive. I have the progressive set up to give 1/2 throttle on the 48, before the secondary 97's start to open. This limits them to about 3/4 throttle. But I don't think if will affect street performance and is nicer to drive.

Maybe the owner just can't stand the neck wrenching torque an engine like that is capable of but it seems like a waste to limit it to partial throttle otherwise.

Partial throttle?? If I really wanted to get some power from the engine I'd run a 600 cfm 4 bl. If it wasn't for Max, that's what would be on it. Runs fine for a street machine.
