flathead V8 on engine lift

I want to get my engine (51) to a machine shop. Can I set it on the oil pan? The heads and exhaust/intake manifolds are off

Yes, the pan is vey stout. Not to worry. Just sent it down gently.

Looking through posts there is talk/pictures of a cradle. Where can I find info on them?

Houbill,

Yes you can, however I would suggest you build a wooden frame around the engine so it sets on the side of the pan & front and rear not the bottom. If you set it on the bottom of the pan depending how far you are traveling and if it moves or not you could damage the bottom of the pan and the oil pickup.

I'm sure others will have suggestions also.

The pan can be easily dented or damaged by setting the engine directly on the pan. Using an old tire or two to cushion the pan and engine is much better, and has never caused any damage on any of my engines during trans port, or while waiting to be hung on a stand or placed on a cradle. :)

Built myself a cradle for the flathead out of 4"x4" for transportation, not verry hard to do.

I generally use an old truck tire, something pretty robust.

I just bought a stand/cradle from Kurt Stumpf ([email protected]). Great price ($69.40 including shipping), super customer service.

It bolts to the exhaust manifold outlets on the block.

My 8BA stayed on an engine stand for months on the bell housing bolts. Sat my old motor down on an old tire with oil pan and all, no damage, no problems. The older style flathead with the cast in bellhousing is better suited for the specialized engine stand mount.

My Flatty shipped from Iowa to Jersey with pan sitting on the pallet. Made it with no issues. I did think it was a bit scary when I saw it but it was the first and only flatty I've bought so thought it was normal.

Think they were referring to the floor stand not the engine stand (but do agree with your comment).

I use a 8BA car motor mount bracket bolted to a 3' 2X4 with the pan resting on a tire.
