I think he is going on the size of the valve lifter cover.. The hole is for another water line..

When mounted on a plane the back of the engine becomes the front. That becomes the highest point of the engine, and all the hot water/stem/vapors go there.Look at a picture of an air camper, you will see a hose arcing up from that hole going back to the radiator behind the engine.

I agree, and it says so in description. The edge of a fuel pump hole cover can be seen in pic #1. My question...how this will fit/look in my roadster...sans the propeller... maybe

I have a dual-plug cylinder head for a Funk conversion where the 'A' engine is inverted (for more prop clearance). Anyone want to venture a guess on how the oiling on THAT inverted piece works?? How do you suppose the rod dippers work?? :D

Brent, nAQ few days ago I posted the same thing in answer to a inquiry about Radial engines. Inverted Aviation engines are not new. The British DeHaviland "Moth" series (Gypsy moth, Tiger Moth etc) used a 3 cyl inverted power plant. In the PT (primary trainer) 19, they used a inverted 6 cyl inline called the "Ranger". The Germans had a Fiesler "Storch" had a inverted V8 and the ME 109 had a V12 that was inverted. I wish when I was in Aviation classes, in vocational school, I had paid more attention to the radials (Wright Wind, Scarab) we had donated by Navy and just how they prevent Hydro lock on the bottom cylinders. I try to recall and can't.

They didn't. Standard procedure of starting a radial was for the ground crew to pull the prop through at least two complete revolutions before the starter was tried. (on a direct drive engine). If the engine started, it blew smoke until the oil was burned out of the cylinders. If the ground crew ran into a hydro locked cylinder, a spark plug was removed and the lock cleared, an assessment made as to the urgency of the flight compared to the guessed at condition of the cylinder, and a decision made as to what to do. Since the oiling system was a dry sump system, the drains from the lower rocker boxes were scavenged by the return pump, there was no pooling of the oil when the engine ran, just a thick mist of oil droplets everywhere inside the engine.

One way of oiling an inverted A engine crank would be to run distribution lines through the pan, with nozzles aimed at the ascending scoop on the rod, and run a dry sump system.
If the bearings are tight, it is amazing at how much oil a plain bearing doesn't need to stay happy, especially at low RPM's. (Prop tip speed considerations).

While the sub title says B, the title and description says A.

I guess if you want to sell something on Ebay you call it a Model A part. From then on it's
caveat emptor.
