have a new rex modern upper plate, 2 condensors gone bad? they look kinda cheep, thinking of trying a Mallory cond. any help or info?:(

The Mallorys are just as bad . We use a vertex magneto unit that is the best out there.
They run $25 each shipping included.

I use Mallory dual point distributors in our speedster and my daughters coupe. These distributors were purchased in the ninties and have been maintainance free, I don't know about the newer ones. I personally prefer the original manual advance distributor in my mostly original cars. I would recommend going back to the original upper plate and points and use the short proof A&L condenser that most suppliers sell. I've never had anything but trouble with the so called modern setup.

The later condensers you buy at the stores are done under bulk contracts and are generally not good quality. I know the guys on the Mustang boards have complained about them. I have also heard some of the Harley guys have had problems with the new ones.

The style that A&L makes are likely made with very good quality condensers, they spent the extra $.10 to make the product right. Your best bet is to use them.

The easiest setup to maintain is the original system. With a good set of points (they can even be old used ones) you should be able to get 40+ years of service with proper lubrication.

I went back to the original setup on my pickup after getting some advice on here and couldn't be happier. The original points and super simple to adjust and the condenser seems to be better built and hold up to the heat better. Only thing I haven't done yet is to install the heat shield on the head just for precaution. Good luck but I'd ditch the nu rex unit if I were you.

With the crap condensers for the modern plate many have gone back to the original setup with condensers from A&L.

I had a bad original condenser that I got at a swap meet. Just for kicks I thought I'd cut it open and install a new capacitor. I just did it to see if it would work and intended to use it just long enough to test it. 5 years later, and it's still in my car. See my reply in #17 of this post link:

I would absolutely get rid of the New Rex setup and go back to the reliable original plate, points,condenser. Use a "burn out proof" A& L unit also sold through brattons and snyders and you should be fine. If you're running some of the performance stuff Bubba may have an alternative for you.... I can most definately say you'll have the least amount of trouble from a stock setup.

Had problems similar problems with new rex mosern point dist. Installed dist no fire to point diassembled new dist to find wire coming into dist. grounded out on housing . After I got the car running the condenser lasted about 30 min ,replaced cheapy condenser and points . Let the vendor know I was none to happy with this modern point dist from new rex . Suggested to the vendor that they do a continuety check on these dist. before shipping to customer . Also suggested they put quality points and condensers in these dist.

The newer conversions are supposed to fixed, so, just install a good set of points/condensers from NAPA.

We use a lot of Genuine Ford points and cond. on older Fords at my shop and don't have much of a problem with them. Bill

Nope, I'll try to remember to look. The points/condenser are for a 50s-early 70s Ford. They are the same, however, they are different for 6 cyl vs 8 cyl and I can't remember off hand which these conversions use. The Nurex website may tell or a phone call. Cheap points/condensers for anything has been a problem over the years and good ones are getting pretty expensive.

Hi Josh. I did not know Motor craft no longer had them them. I got some a while back. I think I got them from O riley but it may have been some other place. I still have a few sets in stock at my shop. I will have to ck around and see if you can still get them. Bill

Most coils put out about the same voltage and I think (limited electronic knowledge) that a condenser stores energy so wouldn't most any condenser for point ignitions work well with the new style points.
