F1 Cowl Vent
 

I took my cowl vent apart to paint the lid and trough and to replace the gasket on my 1950 F1. The lid does not close tight nor will it lock down. I see a spring loaded nut and bolt on the left side and adjusting it up and down increases the tension on the lid, but no adjustment is satisfactory. My shop manual skips over this adjustment. Has any one had success in making this adjustment?

When I did mine I found that the new gaskets available were too hard of a rubber and the vent would not close no matter how I adjusted it. I ended up buying some of soft foam "D" shaped weather stripping and made my own gasket. I just cut it to length and super glued the ends together.

That looks really nice, Bill! Do you know the p/n for that rubber? Does your handle lock in the down position? Not clear that they are supposed to, there's a little track for the spring-loaded bolt that would appear to lock it, but I can't get mine to go in there.

There have been previous post/threads on having to cut the vendor gaskets horizontally as they come to thick. Being too hard is also an issue.

Bob Drake instructions would be excellant if I had a 1940 Ford. I have a 1950 pickup.

I don't remember were I got it from but there are a couple of weatherstrip manufactures that have the same thing. I seem to remember that JC Whitney actually had it at the best price but that would have been 18 years ago. The lever feels like it goes "over center" and the vent locks down tight. Pretty sure that I held the vent down and then tightened all the linkage.

Not sure instructions are going to solve your problem, might be worth reading some of the past post.

I had no problems with my new gasket... You have to get under dash to adjust, their is a little slot for lock position, loosen up spring loaded nut to find position which should be closed. Then when opening, you'll have to move lever over to open.
