Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Bill, that's a sweet ride!
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project That puts the Boss Hog to shame! I would have loved to have seen one of those at Sturgis, I'm sure it would draw the biggest crowd there.
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Very interesting torqure converter, just love things like that.
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project wicked lookin bike love those flat powered!!
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Like Ol'Ron, I just love things like that. Also love people like Boscobill. They don't run into problems, they run into opportunities. The opportunity to prove that it can be done and that they can do it. This build makes some of my problems/opportunities seem pretty trivial.
Way to go Bill!!! |
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Amazing engineering! Where there is the will there is the way. Especially with your talent.
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Very nice, how about more info on torque converter.
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Wow thats using your head for something other than a hat rack!! Nice job!

Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Gee, Thanks guys, i build cycles to ride, not really to show or sell. I had always dreamed of having an Indian 4, but realized i'm getting older, and the chances of that ever coming about were slim. The flathead V8 was the only substitute. Most of the ones i saw online used the extremely hard to find V8 60s, or were monsterously misproportioned. They also all were using a single speed right angle gearbox and stock clutch, and were said to be a bit impractical for a daily rider, and a handful to start out, especially uphill. My soulution was to use the torque convertor and front cover/pump from a Dodge omni. I used a 12" saw blade to adapt it to the V8 flywheel,
utilizing the original pressure plate bolt holes. Also used the Dodge's front clutch after cutting the planetary hub off of it. I shortened the drive shell and welded it to a stub pto shaft, driving a short chain turning a goldwing 1500 shaft drive rear end. The case was made from 9"x1/4" steel tube counterbored for the pump/cover and rear bearing cover. Using cardboard templates, i laid out the steel bellhousing and welded it up after truing. I routed the pump output to the converter with a relief valve from a yamaha, and ran pressure to the clutch via an external ball valve ,allowing for neutral. The stall speed matches the V8 well, smooth solid take offs, and acceleration up to 95+. The old flatty is being fed by a side-draft S&S Super G, and runs smooth and strong. It has proven to be a hassle free daily rider, and a true joy to ride! |
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project I'm impressed! I am very impressed! You are some grease monkey. I'd love to see it in person, see you ride it and hear it in real life. You are amazing!
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project I'm very impressed, engineering and imagination, congratulations on a superb effort.

Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Since the last time i posted , have upgraded to a lock-up style converter and built a gear drive to replace the chain from trans to driveshaft and committed to a color....Also added a GM hei distributor as an ignition trigger, driven from the crank by a small timing belt, as this makes adjusting the timing a breeze, with centrifigal advance as well as the vacuum advance. The timing cover distributor still is used for spark distribution an the points are still there as a backup if the hei module fails.....http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...31713137_n.jpg

Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project boscobill you are a very taltened man
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project This bike is really sweet - have you posted this over on the HAMB, BTW? I think the folks there would get a real kick out of this build .... way to go!
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Very nice! Something like this really interests me. Would love to see it someday and meet you.

Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Hats off to Boscobel Bill and the Flathead V8 Bike project. it deserves a place of honor among the other great bikes to come out of Wisconsin, or anywhere else for that matter.
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Wow! Amazing. That's the best flattie bike I've ever seen. How does it handle and steer?
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Nice!!! I like it!
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Sent you a PM as part of the great promote v-8 60 project. Lou
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project If you take off "enthusiastically", does the bike tend to lean account engine torque? Intriguing piece of machinery. I'm impressed.
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project The bike handles and steers really nice, somewhere between a superglide and a goldwing,
There is a bit of torque reaction, but it is mild and does not make the bike go off course or feel a bit unsteady, in fact it's kind of a cool sensation. The flathead is soooo smooth running and quiet (even with the straight pipes) that it almost feels like an electric motor. My other bikes are starting to feel jealous and lonely...... |
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project I rode an electraglide for years, I'm thinking of riding again:D.
That is a nice ride. Scott |
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project It takes a smart guy to figure that out, very cool!
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Thats quite a fluid drive set up. It reminds me of the old airport tugs used to operate when I still worked at an airport. They had a fluid drive set up but still had a manual shift transmission with a clutch. Is that a chain drive to the rear driveshaft? I assume that is a shift mechanism on the side there with Neutral or Drive selection.
Nothing like 3600+ CCs to motivate! Kerby |
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Was a chain at first, replaced it with a gear dive as it ate chains. The lever is to engage the "lock-up" style converter, a ball valve on the other side selects neutral.

Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Met up with an editor from a bike magazine at a local rally, here's a link to the article he wrote. Wasn't expecting that, just built the thing for fun!

Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project An awesome ride! Saw one similar to yours a few days ago at the Speedway Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project 2 Attachment(s)
Latest photos, built a new tank and replaced the S&S carb with a 94.
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project the solo seat and the bags really flow . The whole bike does not look like bits and pieces put together, but a solid design.

Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Do you happen to know how much the bike weighs?
Very nice work. |
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project 995, give or take a pound or 2, really not a lot more than a full-dress hog or Goldwing.
The mpg is around 27-30 using a stock Holley 94 on a stock manifold with the riser cut off, carb is mounted to the top of the heat riser area, the heat risers blocked with copper pennies! |
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Just plain awesome !! I am duly and truly impressed with your ingenuity and workmanship !! Happy v8- ing !
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Very Very cool bike!
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project |
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Very cool, speaking of which how much heat does the flathead throw your way? Outstanding workmanship man!
Re: 37 Flathead V8 bike project Not really any more, and likely much lower in degrees than that given off from an air cooled V twin. The temp rarely gets above 180. It is a daily rider as well.
