59 AB in 35 ford maxing out oil pressure gauge

I have a 59AB in a 35 Ford truck with a oil pressure/fuel gauge in it.
It maxs out over 50 lbs at an idle.
I have a new 50 lb sender from C&G
What would cause this.
Possibly a defective sender???

Re: 59 AB in 35 ford maxing out oil pressure gauge

Does it also max the gauge with key on / engine off?

Re: 59 AB in 35 ford maxing out oil pressure gauge

does it have a pressure relief in the pump?

Re: 59 AB in 35 ford maxing out oil pressure gauge

It reads 0 with the key off
5 lbs with the key on not running
maxs out past 50 while running at an idle
I don't know if it has a pressure relief in the pump.
It's still 6V pos ground

I bought the truck last year. It didn't have an oil pressure gauge or sender.
I bought a dual gauge set up oil pressure - fuel gauge.
Got a 50 lb sender & just hooked it up today.

Re: 59 AB in 35 ford maxing out oil pressure gauge

Maybe just a really new engine...Is it 50 lb idle cold or also hot? See if you can thread in a manual gauge for a second opinion.

'5 lbs with the key on not running'

This should read zero...I'd suspect the sender unit

usually gauges and senders are made to work together to register correct pressure. i might expect a mismatched set to show too low or too high, but not an accurate amount of pressure. IIRC, there's an 80lb sender available too, if it were me, i'd try one of those ( https://www.ebay.com/itm/39176118369...tion=view_item ) and seriously consider purchasing one of these too...good luck. :)

Temporarily put a mechanical gauge on it that will tell the tale.

Hunt down an orig 50 lb sender. From what I have heard those repros are inaccurate.

First sentence above is correct. Second sentence is BAD advice. This is a 50 psi gauge, needs a 50 psi sender.

I have a mechanical gauge that I wanted to try but unfortunately I can't find it.

I've ordered another sending unit from Carpenter. I would guess the one I bought from C & G was probably made by Carpenter too.

Does it have a 80 lb pump? I was told 10 years ago that 80 lb was all you could get.
I suggest you find out what pressure you are dealing with before you go any further.

Re: 59 AB in 35 ford maxing out oil pressure gauge

The stock senders will only accurately work with a stock gauge and vica versa. These were King Seeley brand and only work correctly with each other. Same goes with the fuel gauge.

When I Bought my '46 Super Deluxe, 59AB, the only gauge that worked was the ammeter. I didn't want to drive it not knowing the oil/temp readings, so I installed accessory gauges. They were intended to be temporary, but I decided to leave them in and include a vacuum gauge. The included pic will show what pressures I have. I later learned how to get the original gauges working, and they somewhat match what the accessory gauges indicate.

Re: 59 AB in 35 ford maxing out oil pressure gauge

Here is my update.
I bought a new sender from Dennis Carpenter. It reads 0 regardless of the RPM, without any teflon tape.

The previous unit from C&G went off the scale high.

I grounded the wire temporarily with the Carpenter unit & the gauge immediately reacted, but went back to zero when the wire was removed.

I found my mechanical gauge and installed it. The engine reads around 32 lbs at an idle and 35 when slightly revved.

I have to agree with the previous post that the aftermarket senders are JUNK!!! I've looked for originals without success.

Re: 59 AB in 35 ford maxing out oil pressure gauge

i recently installed (successfully) a new oil pressure sensor, 4" sensor extension, and dashboard gauge in my '41. i also had to fabricate and install the solid brass/copper plate that runs power from the gas gauge power stud to the oil pressure gauge power stud to as someone had removed it. an insulated wire will not do, it needs to be a raw plate of conductive material in order to dissipate heat properly, from what i can tell. in any event an insulated wire in its place almost caused me an electrical fire on two occasions. good luck.

the new extender and the NOS dash gauge were purchased from Ebay, the oil pressure sensor was bought from one of the usual suspects and was recently manufactured. everything worked well. YMMV of course.

There's a NOS 50 LB sender on eBay right now, eBay item number:147032870427.
Bob Selzam is the seller, and his stuff is always good. Price is $159 but I've seen them bring more.

That'll raise hell with the rate of inflation!:D

There is no inflation, They just printed much more fake money so your old money is worth half as much

Re: 59 AB in 35 ford maxing out oil pressure gauge

Those NOS 50 LB senders have been really scarce for a long time. When I was doing my 42 Ford project, I really needed a 21A-6312 crankshaft pulley which was holding up the whole project. None of the usual suspects had one. I'd be embarrassed to say what I paid for the one I did find. I was going to paint it gold for what I paid! It balances out. Some things cost next to nothing and others you wanted to puke but you needed the part. The aftermarket is reasonable but if it doesn't work not a good deal.

Update #2
I have installed a 50 lb. oil pressure sender from Kaiser Willys Auto Supply, part number 800807 using a 1/4" NPT to 1/8" NPT reducer bushing.
The gauge is working properly now.

good to hear! not surprised...it sometimes takes a few attempts. i've got plenty of parts that i'll never used to prove the point! ha

our problems weren't the same but i reckon our satisfaction when rectified was just as satisfying. :)

I am mildly surprised that none of the old-timers mentioned the Jeep sender. I didn't mention it because I wasn't positive. THAT much I've learned from past embarrassments!
