1935 Ford "expert" question 3 Attachment(s)
The 1935 Ford question of the day is........The instruction decal for the air breather. I have been really reading Francis & DeAngelis book the last few days and really studying pictures as well as details in print and I noticed the attached photo of a 1935 factory photo of a chassis and noticed the air breather maintainance decal facing the "Right" side of the car. ALL 35's I have seen and two photos I have a very high point restoration 35's all have the decal facing the left side of the motor.
Menutiae I know IS it supposed to face to the right side of the motor? The left side of the motor?? OR Where there two, one each side??? |
Re: 1935 Ford "expert" question Left side to serve as a reminder about oil changes and cleaning the air cleaner element each time the oil level is checked.

Re: 1935 Ford "expert" question Why is is shown on the right side in the restoration manual then?
|

It's NOT a "restoration" manual but in the "The Early Ford V8" as Henry Built It by Ed Francis and George De Angelis. The short answer IS remember these are assembled by humans and at several locations......Was every rule followed to the "T"??? Most likely not in this case. David's extensive knowledge and intellect most assured will expand on this!! |
Re: 1935 Ford "expert" question In the 35-36 Ford Book, on p105, it says "A decal was located on the right (passenger)
side of the air filter..." terry |

Re: 1935 Ford "expert" question If the Club's '35-'36 book indicates that it was on the right side, then we need the author's basis for the change from the prior three model year's practice of it being on the same side as the dipstick. What say you, Don?
|
Re: 1935 Ford "expert" question I rather doubt they would place a sticker on each side. Makes perfect
sense they would place it on the dip stick side. Rarely do you open the other hood side. You would think quality control would have caught that. |
Re: 1935 Ford "expert" question Maybe it's placed on the left side for those countries that drive on the wrong side of the road. terry
|
Re: 1935 Ford "expert" question Terry, the 35-36 Book page 105 does say that the decal for the air cleaner is on the right side, but " when it was orientated with the "FRONT" embossing facing the front, and the vent holes facing the firewall"
It looks like the second photo has the air cleaner installed with the vents facing the driver side. First photo cannot determine the orientation. |
Re: 1935 Ford "expert" question Actually the two photos are of different air cleaner types. The Ford archives chassis photo shows the standard dry air cleaner whereas in the second photo that's an accessory oil bath air cleaner.
|
Re: 1935 Ford "expert" question With respect: I do not believe that you can assume anything. If you have good documentation it is proven. Would the car be Dearborn judged by assumptions?
|
Re: 1935 Ford "expert" question Gary, you are right. The 2nd pic shows the dry type air filter. But the filter, itself, hasn't been put on right. When the word "front" is placed facing the front, then you wouldn't see that many vent holes. They would be facing more towads the firewall.

With due respect to all the contributors, the statement on page 105 of The 1935-36 Ford Book is correct. The decal location was shown in Ford Owners Manuals and Service Buls asw well as unrestored original air cleaners.

Here's another picture similar to Don's above. Decal says manufactured in the USA by the Burgess Battery company oddly enough. Wonder if the decal would have been applied by Burgess at the time the Air Cleaner was manufactured or later by Ford (?).

Attached is the Ford Engineering drawing for the air cleaner (Part No. 40-9600-B). It shows the location of the decal on the right (passenger) side.
I included 1935-36 air cleaner information on page 117 of my book based on Don's research, the attached drawing and period Ford sales and instruction book illustrations. |
Re: 1935 Ford "expert" question Just goes to show that the engineers at Ford (more likely Burgess in this case) were/are like the rest of the human race, prone to making errors from time to time. The right side is the right side, but largely useless being on that side.
|
Re: 1935 Ford "expert" question I kinda think that each owner of the car would read the decal once at most, no matter which side it was on. And probably not all of it! LOL
