Inertial third brake light - suction mounted

A friend at the Pinetree Jamboree had a suction mounted battery powered inertial (mercury switch ?) third brake light.

No manufacturer identity on the case.

Would appreciate any help sourcing as it seemed to do the job and be easily moved between cars.

Thank you.

Maybe check out Google. I know they make them for bicycles.

Here are some available on Amazon:

Re: Inertial third brake light - suction mounted

I bought one years ago on Ford Barn, has suction cups and 4 bulbs, mercury operated when hit brakes. Works great.

Sounds interesting. The one 38Bill references on Amazon are all for bicycles - don't see how you would easily apply any of those to a car. Bob - can you identify your source, or Jacques - can you ask your friend?

Re: Inertial third brake light - suction mounted

That’s the exact one - suction cup mounting. He thought the name might have been something like Brake-lite (?)

Re: Inertial third brake light - suction mounted

Here's some suction cup mounted 3rd brake lights as revealed by Mr. GOOGLE.
Mercury switch not mentioned.

Re: Inertial third brake light - suction mounted

Can they even sell Mercury these days?

I would check out Brake-Liter -- love mine and I even have it set up to work with turn signals.
Best part, is the guy sent me one to test, and if he didnt hear back from me in a week, he would then charge my card. If I didnt like it, I let him know and then send it back.

Re: Inertial third brake light - suction mounted

Those look nice, but this was cordless and activated by stopping - likely a mercury switch. Really slick.

Main body was only about 4” wide, perhaps 5” with the suction cup brackets.

The bicycle versions referenced above look very similar, save for the suction cups

Re: Inertial third brake light - suction mounted

Uncle Bezos has something called BikeSpark which looks like the ticket, absent the suction cups . Shouldn’t be too hard to fab a mount

i agree with nelsb01,i too have a brake-liter kit installed on my '37 fordor split window. all the distracted and tailgators wake up when you tap the brake before actually stopping. its remarkable how it works. Tom.

farmertom: Thanks for posting. Please let us know where we can purchase the brake-liter kit you speak of.
This is what I found but, it requires wiring.

Here's the no wire bike light set up.

The one Jac1960 is talking about is the one I have. No name so trying to find the paper work for it.

Re: Inertial third brake light - suction mounted

yeah,19Fordy that is correct website for brakelighter, and it does require wiring fairly easy. on my "37 fordor i made a 1/4" size hole in cardboard package tray and run the entire wire harness down to underside of car study carefully how to get to wires you need to tap into.you will find that you will use most of the length up.Tom

I installed a Flasher Module on the third brake light on my '30 Town Sedan and my '55 Ranchwagon to wake up the person behind me. It flashes the light three times then stays solid. 12v only tho.

Wanted to report back on my progress.

“Brake Spark” makes a rechargeable inertial LED brake light for bicycles that is really bright.

Using suction cups from Uncle Bezos and a piece of 1/8 x 3/4 aluminum bar stock, I made a very workable prototype with another to follow.

Very happy with the results !

Thanks very much for posting your brake light design. Looks great. I would like to make one for the 40 Ford split rear window so there is a light on each side of the window divider bar. WELL DONE.

I think you meant BIKE SPARK.

Please post the site where you bought the suction cups.

Suction cups were bought on Amazon, “Pawfly” 30 pack in various sizes; the 1.2” is the Goldilocks size and can be purchased without the others. Wasn’t sure for the first run, but 2x 1.2” are more than enough.

Happy to supply brackets for anyone who needs one for cost of postage and a small donation to www.whistlepigrescue.com in the amount of your choosing .

I like this idea. But for use on my pickup, I might make one with strong magnets to go on my tailgate.

The Bike Spark light seems like a very good product, with stated recharge intervals of as long as 3 months. I’ve bought several for this project.

I just ordered one. I'll post it after I make the tailgate magnet mount.

Re: Inertial third brake light - suction mounted

The bike spark arrived today. Is it normal for a dim light to be on in mode 1, then go to bright on decelaration? I assume it is, I just thought it was a brake light only. I have it charging now. Will work on the magnet mount tomorrow.

I had a school bus stop light as a 3rd brake light. This is in my opinion the best way for a pickup

Yes, and upon braking there are at least two options - one a steady brake light and the other a strobe.

If I recall correctly, the charge interval is one month in “steady” mode and three months in “strobe”,

Magnetic mount finished. It was easy to do using two Harbor Freight magnet hooks for the magnets.

Neat idea! Cover the magnets with saran wrap to protect your paint.

I put a layer of clear packing tape on them to prevent scratching. Works perfectly!

Re: Inertial third brake light - suction mounted

Jacques,

The bracket looks very professional. Nice job. Now I just need to order the BikeSpark G4R from Amazon. I see there are a number of different models of BikeSpark. I will make sure to order the G4R model you called out in your 9-2-22 posting that has the mounting fasteners at 80 mm.

Thanks again,

JimG

Re: Inertial third brake light - suction mounted

Thank you Jim; let me know if you ever need additional suction cups. Note that you will want to clean glass before installing for best results.
