52 F1 oil seal 2 Attachment(s)
Hi guys
Workin on replacing the oil seal. I’m having difficulty getting old one out & the part looks different than what’s up on truck. Is there a cap that covers oil seal? It’s not shown in shop manual. |
Re: 52 F1 oil seal There are a few different oil seals, which one are you talkin' about?
|
Re: 52 F1 oil seal Thanks- The part number is M-4676.
Is there a deflector / cap over it? If yes is it presses on or screw in. See pic to left above. |
Re: 52 F1 oil seal The shop manual doesn't show a deflector, just the seal and companion flange.
|
Re: 52 F1 oil seal I know but maybe this rear was changed out. See pic it has a cap - deflector or something I can’t get off....
|
Re: 52 F1 oil seal changed out mine on my 49 F1-new one looks just like yours
|
Re: 52 F1 oil seal How did get the plate or seal out?
Do I need the deflector if I destroy it getting it out? |
Re: 52 F1 oil seal drill two hole on opposite sides--run a large sheet metal screw in and pry out seal using the alternate holes. always remember the "edge" of the seal goes against the fluid side
|
Re: 52 F1 oil seal What deflector? Are you asking about the oil slinger that's behind the seal?
|
Re: 52 F1 oil seal No please see pic on left. It’s in front
|
Re: 52 F1 oil seal Does the pic on left show the shield and bearing in place with the axle removed?
|
Re: 52 F1 oil seal Hi no
The pic shows the view with drive shaft, companion flange & nut removed. |

This from shop manual:

Re: 52 F1 oil seal Thanks all! It was confusing that the replacement didn’t look like what I was seeing on the truck. What I’ve gathered is the old original seal had a metal lip. The replacement doesn’t and it’s not needed. So I can now hack at it tomorrow.

Re: 52 F1 oil seal Just remember you're messing with the pre-load on the pinion. Need to mark the nut well and be sure it gets back to the same location.
|
Re: 52 F1 oil seal Jerry thanks. I didn’t mark it. The book says tork 140-180.
Two questions. Since I still haven’t removed the oil seal. Should I put the nut and yoke back tork and mark? Or too late and just tork to specs? |
Re: 52 F1 oil seal I think it's to late to correct it now. For future reference, always mark a pinion nut before you remove it. The torque spec is all you have to go on now, most likely will be ok.

Re: 52 F1 oil seal I would absolutely go with torque to specs rather than the position the nut was in 68 yrs ago when it had brand new bearings. Although you may end up backing off to get the cotter pin in.
|
Re: 52 F1 oil seal I suggested he mark the nut, pinion and flange. Upon reassembly, hopefully
those marks all line up somewhere in the 140-180# range. If all that lined up, you'd definitely know the condition the bearings are in, that's for sure. |
Re: 52 F1 oil seal The Dana 44 in the early years had shims to set preload but the nut does need to be torqued back to specs.
D44 axles had several different configurations on pinion oil seals over the different years and applications. In 1952 they still had the original set up with the 8M 4676-A seal. There was a gasket just inside the seal area too. On the outside they had a felt dust seal that fit into the groove on the universal joint flange and that was all they needed. If you find an old original, it may still be good. They had a leather lip with a garter spring so they last a lot longer than a rubber seal. Here is a link to an OEM type. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1949-1957-F...EAAOSwlx9ffVeG |
Re: 52 F1 oil seal 3 Attachment(s)
Thanks folk. Attaching pics for next novice like me. I used a dermal blade, cut and then was able to pry the old seal out. The second pic is the new seal. Last pic is the new seal installed.

Re: 52 F1 oil seal Hi guys
I’m adding to my earlier oil seal post. I’m not sure if what happened today is related to the preload. Truck is a daily driver. All stock and I’ve put on a few hundred miles since replacing the seal. There is no leak. Today while driving I heard a fairly loud tapping noise. As I slowed the noise slowed. I pushed in clutch noise still there. I stopped truck and noise disappeared. Reved engine stopped, no tapping. Put back in gear and tapping was gone. Truck shifted fine there after and no noise. Note: around a thousand miles or so I had tranny professionally rebuilt. Installed new clutch and throw out bearing. |
