No oil pressure [8BA] This on new rebuild, done at a shop.[this shop is OK done other work for me] Started with electric gauge checked with mech. no pressure. pulled the gauge only drips from the tube. Changed oil again, same. Pulled the pan and pump [looks new as the invoice said]. The engine fired right up and sounds good. With the pan off I can see assemble lube here and there. Put air up the pump hole via rubber stopper no bubbles from my oil pressure tube. Plain C maybe D. Any ideas where to look next, or how check things further.

Re: No oil pressure [8BA] Call the shop that built it ! ASAP just to make sure they can't come back and void any warranty. How close is the pickup from the pan ? Did they assembled the engine and the pan ? , intake ?

Re: No oil pressure [8BA] Did they pack the oil pump with STP or assembly lube to lubricate the gears?

Re: No oil pressure [8BA] You can check your oil gallery plug to make sure it is installed. It should have been removed for cleaning.
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] Was a "Full Flow" filter added?
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] The pickup tube is nice and close the bottom, not that
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] No filter
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] Oil galley plug??? maybe that's way the air seem to be coming out up in the block not any where else.
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] Maybe they forgot the idler gear in the back. You should get some oi pressure from just turning the stater with the spark plugs out.
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] Do 8ba's have an oil pressure relief valve in the valve valley? If so,was it installed? Just a thought.

Re: No oil pressure [8BA] All good ideas and a pile of help. Takes me awhile to check each one. Still looking, this engine is all WAS all together with all the body fluids in it.
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] had it happen before--oil gallery plug was left out
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] Guys I got to go to work, I'll be back and do some more looking. Thanks so much
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] You don't want it too close , sometimes the pickup is too close and can't suck the oil it's blocked by the oil pan
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] Return it to the builder... No need to chase rabbits, if the builder is a "good guy" I am sure that he would rather find and fix the issue than have someone else "maybe" get it to work Chap

Re: No oil pressure [8BA] Had a day to think about this oil pressure problem. I made a plug with place to put some air into the block. Doing so there seem to be a lot of air exiting some where in the block. This laying on my back holding the hose and a light trying look and lesson. I've seem a picture of the oil system here [ford barn] and it looks like there should not be any where for mass amount of air to come out. I understand how the system works so I think or guess that there may be hole that is not suppose to be in the system. I wonder if I can make some sort low pressure pump to push oil up the oil pump hole so I can see something. Does this sound like a workable plan? I maybe thinking out loud. Thanks for all your replies .

Re: No oil pressure [8BA] Remove the intake manifold to see if the fuel pump pushrod bushing is in place.
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] The fuel pump rod is out[electric now] the bushing is there but a bolt is in the hole keep the pressure up
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] There is an idler gear behind the flywheel that drives the oil pump off of the camshaft. I had a shop install the gear backwards so it was freewheeling. I was able to tell by pulling the oil pump out and looking up in there, I could only see half of the gear and I could spin it with a long screwdriver because it wasn't meshing with the cam. It's worth a look...
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] Check the gear on the back of the cam shaft. I had one come loose and no oil pressure. Had to pull the cam and have the gear drilled and a pin put in. Rare occurance but it does happen.
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] 4 Attachment(s)
Here's the gear. I bet it was not installed. Easy to forget. 8BA cover is also made of stamped steel. 51 Merc cover (shown) is cast.

Re: No oil pressure [8BA] I do not understand why you are trying to fix a problem with a new build. Take it back to the builder. You are voiding any warranty that you may have had.
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] with fuel pump off the gear is ok I tried to turn with screw drive no movement. Today I pulled the intake on left side clear down toward the back under the casting that goes to the oil pressure port on the outside I can see the top of a gear, either cam gear or idler. Is this right? ya have to almost side on you head to see down there!!! Now why I don't take it back to the builder, I did call him, nice guy. Earlier he had built me a different engine He put this together in 2015 for another guy. The fellow I bought it from. This had never been started, stored high and dry with assemble lube keeping it nice Told the shop of the oil problems he remembered this engine and said that from what he recall the whole deal was ok. I got the paper work that was with this rebuild showing all he had done and what new parts were installed, so that's the rest of that story. How about that hole??

Re: No oil pressure [8BA] B-O-B makes a good point.
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] Assembly lube dried up and blocking oil passages? Plug behind cam shaft gear missing? Crank clean out plugs missing? Sounds like you might have to tear it down and clean it. Mike
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] I can test your oil pump if you'd like.
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] If you take the oilpressure sender out and fill it up with oil...then crank it with the port open you should see flow there even if there is a plug missing somewhere.
No flow the pump has to come out and be checked. |
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] When this first started did the gauge thing both electric and mechanical. With the port open oil dribbled out. The more I think about the hole above the cam gears ..lube hole..If there is plug behind that gear that area seems to be where I'm getting to much flow when I play air games. I just wanted idea where the problem was. I've pretty much figured I'd have to drain every and pull it out. The more informed I could be ahead of that would be in my opinion would good. Engine tear down and assemble does bother me, just messy to start with.

Re: No oil pressure [8BA] I agree with chap52 take it back to the builder if he assembled it he’s the one who should stand behind it
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] The moral of this story is assemble your own engine. Cover all bases.
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] Not much dissasemble to verify plug missing behind frontcover if the camgear is bolt on...a whole other headache with a press on gear.
Loosen front pulley tap it out a bit...unbolt front cover and camgear...should be able to do it in car. |
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] The early 8BA's also had a plug at the rear of block like the 59A and earlier engines.
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] OK pulled the front apart no plug behind the timing gear. I can't remember if there is a plug in the back. "flatheadmurre" gets the prize
Re: No oil pressure [8BA] "flathead9" got me the info before I typed my reply

Re: No oil pressure [8BA] Thanks to all who replied to my problem , I've got a handle on this now. Nuts, bolts, gaskets and my time no big deal. Guess the shop owner had a brain fart, shit happens and life goes on. thanks again
