Use Caulking Gun to Fill Transmission and Differential

7 Attachment(s)
Just thought of this yesterday and thought it might help folks make the messy job of filling your trans. and diff. with gear oil, etc. Also steering box with corn head grease, etc. Works great. You can"squirt" the gun at any angle.

1.Remove the plastic end cap plunger from empty caulking tube and clean out the insides of both nice and clean. I used gasolene.
2. Cut spout so it has a 3/8 in. ID.
3. Screw in 3/8 dia. bolt just a few threads to prevent any leaking.
4. Pour gear oil into cleaned out caulking gun. It holds 15 oz.
5.Insert plastic plunger.
6. Insert cartridge in caulking gun, unscrew bolt and pull the trigger to fill.
7. Remove plastic plunger through the spout with 1/8 dia. rod, wooden dowel or long thin screwdriver.

Empty can was used to support cartridge. Use different cartridges for specific lubricants.

Brilliant and way less messy, and not near as wasteful, than other ideas I have tried. Well done, sir!

I particularly appreciate this kind of thread. 19Fordy gives us a good solution to a problem with pictures and narrative, so that his good idea makes sense to the densest of us.
Thanks for the information.

Why reinvent the wheel.
I buy a gallon container of gear oil that has a pump and hose/nozzle with it to fit in the filler hole.

I bought a pump from Amazon with my one galloon Stalube GL4 gear oil. It's about $10.

Please share more info? Brand and where you purchase?

I didn't know there was a pump available. I hope it works good as I have never found pumps like those to be long lasting. Mine always break and never reach the bottom of the bottle. Plus, caulking tube is cheap.

Yep that's all I use. Have 3 or 4 of them. Used for the last 15 or 20 years. ;)

I posted a URL with the Amazon Link. Click on it to go there. The one I bought is a 36671 Pennzoil Fluid Transfer Pump. I only used it once so far, so I can't say how long it might last. It is all plastic, so not all that sturdy, but you are only pumping a little gear oil.

Re: Use Caulking Gun to Fill Transmission and Differential

Years ago, I bought a suction/pump device that looks like the caulking gun set up from NAPA. It was probably used in the old days to suck oil out of the oil filter canister as well as filling trans and difs. I would think that they would still be available.

They are still available. I bought one like you mention last year at Advanced Auto, but have not used it yet. I also carry about a one quart bottle with what looks like a simple liquid hand soap pump screwed on top for adding small amounts of gear lube to trans or rear when traveling on tours. Works very well.

A lot of good ideas presented here on this thread.....all good in my opinion.

I make a 50/50 solution of synthetic gear oil (90wt) and synthetic grease to put into my steering box, u-joint to put it in I use a air powered grease gun--less messy and works good. I like the caulk tube idea, will give it a try

I like this idea.
I have one of the pictured pumps and as stated above, it doesn't reach down far enough into the container.

Can't wait to try the caulking gun trick. And I have been known to add some stp as well. Thick is good in a crash-box. Thank you for the idea!

I us e the pump JimG pictures - works pretty well for rear ends and transmissions. I don't know of anything that is really that is a perfect setup - it's messy at times but not expensive. I usually get a couple three years out of one

I've been using a suction gun like this forever. I like the caulking gun idea. It looks like more work but would move 600W easier.
