Looking for a little info 49 Pickup

I'm looking to add some company for my 30 coupe, and have takin' a liking to a 49 1/2 ton. Are the seats adjustable? Leg room for 6ft 2?

Re: Looking for a little info 49 Pickup

I've got the same truck basically. The seat does slide.
Mine is all the way back against the gas tank. I'm 5'8"
and it's comfortable. The guy I got it from was around
6' 2" or so and he was comfortable.
If you wanted a bit more legroom than having the seat
all the way back, you'd probably have to delete the
gas tank and move it to under the bed.
Headroom may or may not be an issue. I have about
6" to the headliner.

Re: Looking for a little info 49 Pickup

This is not specific to the 49 but old pick-ups in general, the seat back is too vertical and the angle is made worse by sliding the seat bottom aft. It may affect your comfort level.

If you are comfortable in your 30 coupe you should have no problems with the 49.
I am 6'-0" and things are a little tight in my 41. I agree with the comment about the seat and find the size of the steering wheel is also a factor.

Doesn't appear to be any special group dedicated to the F1 series. Is there another website you'd recommend? A buying guide of some kind would be helpful.

Re: Looking for a little info 49 Pickup

While many have made the tank swap for 'more' seat room, I'm not convinced on the value. Considering that the stock seat is fairly vertical and already uses every bit of the avaiable cab space, changing might shift the geometry but can't create new space. I'm 6'2" and don't have any head or confort issues. Your fit may vary.

On the sites, take a look at the 48-56 forum at Ford Truck Enthusiasts (ford-trucks.com). Good group, very accepting, and active.

Re: Looking for a little info 49 Pickup

I'm on Ford Truck Enthusiasts occasionally. I don't
think it's as good as this forum, even though there isn't
a dedicated F-1 section here.

The first time I saw that bed tank design it was in the
Classic Haulers catalog...... They're now pretty much
handled by Mid-Fifties.
http://midfifty.com/item.php?INV_ID=...ectangle--door

There's a few variations out there on this theme, including one where a section of the bed panel flips up, allowing access to the gas fill neck, etc.

I can't direct you exactly because it's not on my "pending projects" list, but some pretty
clever stuff is available.

I'm 6' even and with the seat fully back on my '49 I'm comfortable, but the bigger problem is that the gas pedal is too vertical so I end up just operating it with my toe.

I owned a 65 F-100 that I installed a 302 in. I replaced the accelerator pedal with something else, might have been from the same donor car. Was more of a full-floating style that operated with a cable. Maybe something like that would work better in the '49? Model A's have a funny kind of gas pedal, not very comfortable either, but you get used to it.

There are a few of us here that focus on trucks. In my opinion, you'll get better info here than some other forums because there you have to sort out the real stuff from the junk that gets posted by guys who are in competition for post counts.

You got honest info on this thread...

Just beware, you buy one and others will follow it home! ;)

So then, where are the normal rust-out spots to look for?

I have a safety valve for such things... called a wife!:)

Re: Looking for a little info 49 Pickup

Cab corners ,cowl panels, and the floor pans are the common rust area. If it has a heater(or had a heater) pay close attention to the passenger side floor pan.

Add to those, around the windshield, fender extensions, fenders where the running board attaches, and the running boards themselves. All good fun.

Yeah, I know what you mean, "the voice of reason".... hahaha

Rust out spots really depends on the area you buy your truck from. Mid-west and south can be really bad, north west US varies, southwest US is usually solid....

Most I've seen rust out where the lower valance meets the front fender extensions - below the headlight. The metal bed floor can rot depending on how the truck was cared for. Plus what the others have mentioned.

FortyNiner 03-02-2017 06:05 PM

Re: Looking for a little info 49 Pickup

As others have mentioned, there are a couple of standard rust areas for the F1s. The fenders, in particular, are prone to rust where Ford designed in stiffeners that ensured a reliable rust breeding ground. Portions of the joint between the upper and lower front fenders, as well as any complicated bend area of the lowers. Running boards also had stiffeners - same story. The running board to fender joints, and often the rear fender to bed joint, are common trouble areas.

For the 53-56 trucks, the cab roof by the rain channel, the front of the hood, and the side cowls are watch areas.

Went and took a good look at the 49 over the weekend. Gonna bring it home next weekend.:) Couldn't find any rust except for the drivers side floor boards. Should be an easy fix. The truck needs a lot of mechanical repair, no brakes at all, the wiring harness is a DIY setup that's in good shape but I'll want to put it back stock, has been converted to 12 volts however. The engine appeared to have a considerable amount of blow-by, my first flatty V8, I'll have lots of questions.

AFA answering questions, I only know a little from what I've gleaned owning mine for 1.5 years but I'm game.

Re: Looking for a little info 49 Pickup

More like twins Ken! Is that red a factory color? Any fancy coolness under the hood? First thing I'll need to address is the brakes, that shouldn't be too big of a deal. The choke is very sticky, hard to push back in, and it acts as though the accelerator pump isn't working. After having it running for a while it appears an accumulation of oil gathered above the RHS head and started to smoke. Leaking from the intake manifold? Maybe?

Looks like a solid truck. If you don't already have one, a 49-52 Shop Manual is a good investment. They are available on Amazon/eBay for about $30, typically.

Does this mean you and I are going to be forming the North Cascade Chapter of the Early Ford V8 Club? Benny

Hey Art that is one nice looking truck:), post some more pictures when you get it home. After you fix the safety issues, I would just drive it to see how the motor shakes out.

I think the pictures make it look a little nicer than it really is, but it's still pretty good. Way nicer than I expected to end up with. I think I'm better off having to fix mechanical things rather than patch rust outs.:) The engine didn't make any nasty sounds. I wonder if the oil leak could be back at the fuel pump? If the V8 is anything like the Model A, it can be pretty tired and still run pretty good. The accelerator pump probably has a check valve? Maybe it's just gunked up.

Re: Looking for a little info 49 Pickup

Spent some time getting the truck running a little better. Pretty pleased with the progress so far. The gas is old, which isn't helping but at least it is starting well. The choke cable was all bent up and sticky, straighten and lubed it up and is working pretty good now. The throttle return spring was anchored to the rubber hose running to vacuum line on the distributor! Where is the throttle return spring supposed to go? Anyway, I put together a bit of a walk-a-round video. I should have a new master cylinder tomorrow... might get a drive around the block!:)
