Heaters? How many cars have heaters, water, exhaust ? Zeke

Re: Heaters? My '40 has a hot water heater.
I live in Michigan, can't really enjoy your ride in the spring or the fall without one. |

Re: Heaters? I've had experience on seven late 30 flatheads. 5 had hot water heaters(two are Ford Script), one has an exhaust heater, one has a Southwind gasoline.
These were all originally in cold weather states: Ohio, Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming. I've found it's hard to find fan parts for the Ford Script heaters, and hard to find heat exchangers for the exhaust heaters, if that's a factor for you. Since they were mostly aftermarket or dealer installed, be hard to find numbers.... Gordon |
Re: Heaters? The 39 Ford C91 will be getting a Tropic Air added for those fine late fall foliage tours.

Re: Heaters? Here is what goes into my cars. This is California. We dont need much more than a warm backside....

Re: Heaters? I have an exhaust hot air heater. Wife loves it.

Re: Heaters? Given my location it will come as no surprise that my 39 Deluxe had a heater installed. It is a B.F.Goodrich connected up to the cooling system by hoses. One to the lower right radiator hose and the other to the top of the right head. I removed it years ago for reasons I can't recall but still have it. The stick on glass, later plastic, "frost shields" were standard equipment on cars here in winter. The weak heaters needed a little help in our cold weather.

Re: Heaters? 3- 40s all have hot water heaters. (wagon, convert, V8 coupe)
|
Re: Heaters? My '52 has a very good stock heater, and since I drive my car every weekend it gets a real work out here.
|
Re: Heaters? The pickup has a good working Southwind heater. The stock unit in the '53 Courier provides plenty of heat. I have electric seat heaters in the hot rod for the cooler days.
|
Re: Heaters? Kept aftermarket heater in my 47. My wife's 41 will have original restored and installed. My 39 3/4 ton will too when that happens all hot water heaters
|
Re: Heaters? My 41 still has original Ford water heater(even has 41 date on back of housing ) but my 49 has an early 50s Western Auto water heater.
|
Re: Heaters? My 50 F-1 has the factory fresh aire hot water heater installed.
|
Re: Heaters? My truck will have a Vintage Air water heater/ defroster.
|
Re: Heaters? Have a hot water heater/defroster in my 51 Meteor and a hot water heater in my 32 roadster hot rod. Both are old swap meet 6Volt units. Run a resister, both cars converted to 12v

Re: Heaters? 1 Attachment(s)
39 Deluxe has a Ford hot water heater. Went to a lot of trouble and expense to buy and restore it but it works great.
49 F-1 has what I thought was a factory hot water heater but some say it is a Firestone item. 49 Mercury has factory fresh air heater. I drive these cars year around if the streets free from salt and I really appreciate the heaters Model A has a manifold heater which is much better than none, and works best on a hot day. Merry Christmas to all! |
Re: Heaters? My 35 has a manifold heater much like the Model A heater that uses the engine fan air blowing over a exhaust manifold heat exchanger directly through a hole in the firewall. I have not seen any others like it. It does take the edge off if its not to cold out. Has anybody else have one like it?
|
Re: Heaters? My 47 tonner has Ford hot water heater that looks just like the one in Dick Webber's picture. Only mine is not as pretty. Mine looks like it was added by the way the holes are cut thru the firewall.
|
Re: Heaters? I have a 40 heater that came with my 40. I am trying to restore it. Need a motor and trim clips to finish things off. I hope to install it this winter if I find the parts and get the time.
Merry Christmas!! Dave |

Re: Heaters? Southwind Jr. in my 35 pickup. All NOS guts. Still needs a little tweaking, but heats things up very well.
|
Re: Heaters? Have the stock Ford hot water heater in my '46 Tudor. Had the core cleaned out and it works pretty well. The defroster is a little "iffy" but better than no defroster.
|
Re: Heaters? My `35 1-1/2 ton has a nice water heater, and appears to be factory or at least Ford. It is odd how it is plumbed, and has some plastic replacement tees and wrong clamps and such. I'd love to find out how it supposed to be plumbed.

Re: Heaters? This is the heater shown in the 46-48 sales literature:
http://i1059.photobucket.com/albums/...Heater0001.jpg This is the fresh air heater that became available at the end of '47 and is in my car: http://i1059.photobucket.com/albums/...cal/Heater.jpg And these are pictures of that heater in my car: The inlet of the air duct that takes air from in front of the radiator: http://i1059.photobucket.com/albums/...IMG_2437-s.jpg That then goes along under the hood: http://i1059.photobucket.com/albums/...al/Heater2.jpg Meeting the fan on the firewall when the hood is closed. The cable going up over the duct controls the damper in the duct (bottom of pivot shaft seen near fan port) to control the air going through the duct. http://i1059.photobucket.com/albums/...al/Heater3.jpg Into the heater coil on the passenger side of the firewall. http://i1059.photobucket.com/albums/...al/Heater1.jpg To go out both sides of the bottom plus a slit along the bottom unless that damper is pulled up to divert it to the windshield. http://i1059.photobucket.com/albums/...al/Heater4.jpg Three dashboard controls. Left for defrost. Middle one direction two speed fan switch. Right controls the damper in the hood duct to control the outside air coming in. http://i1059.photobucket.com/albums/...al/Heater5.jpg |
Re: Heaters? My 41 has a switch that has high and low in forward or reverse. Does anyone know what the purpose of this is as I don't see the advantage of reverse.
|
Re: Heaters? Hey Old Henry - how well does that fresh ai heater work - that is some set-up!!
|
Re: Heaters? My 1st car was a '41 Plymouth coupe (with a back seat)that had a hot water heater under the driver seat (disconnected) - I've never seen another one and always wonder how they functioned.
|
Re: Heaters? Has anyone tried the approximate 7 X 7 X 7" hot water heater sold by Summit Racing ? looks like an easy mount and fit. Don't know about output listed at 12,000BTU. Zeke

Re: Heaters? This is a box-type heater I bought twenty-plus years ago from J. C. Whitney for my Model A but was never installed. It looks to be the same one you are describing. It did not come with heater hose or shut off valve. It is designed so that a defroster could be hooked up with a bit of duct hose and other items. The fan is two speed and it came with the switch. I used it in my '32 and it does a good job.
Oh yeah, I paid about $70 for it back then. http://i1281.photobucket.com/albums/...ps422dfc33.jpg |
Re: Heaters? My 48 had a heater in it one stage ( square Ford thing with the flaps). I came with the parts for my car. It is still boxed away. I never bothered to install it as we have a temperate climate here.....anyway I have a "dirty great big heater" that radiates through the firewall and up through the toe board of my vehicle.

Re: Heaters? The knob on the switch should say Indirect-slow & fast, Off, Direct-slow & fast. Direct heat blows air through the core and out the front of the heater. Indirect is reverse and Should be for Defrost, and as Old Henry says, for indirect heat, as it will suck air through the core and blows it out the back side of the heater against the firewall.

Re: Heaters? Thanks ,Old Henry and Dave. Mine is all there and works but it seems kind of pointless but it's nice to know what it's supposed to do.

Re: Heaters? 1 Attachment(s)
Further to my post - my Coupe had a dealer installed gas fired heater installed back in teh 30s' (that was scarey!) which came with a nice factory match dash mounted heater push/pull knob and cable that went to an interior door flap to open and close the air. When I converted to the 1940 hot water heater I used a modern water shut off valve as you can see in the picture and re-purposed the heater cable to operate the valve. Click on picture to enlarge:D

It sounds like you might have a GENUINE FORD accessory heater. If it is like this one, you do. They are pretty scarce. Also shown, is the original FORD adjustment device. I believe the lower inlet tube, in the third photo, is the correct one. MIKE :) (mikeburch) CLICK ON PHOTOS TO ENLARGE |
