Re: range on a full tank of gas 10us gal

The most I have gotten was 245 miles and it was very empty, the gauge had stopped moving miles before ---I though I was going to run out but made it , this was on a trip and I was averaging fuel mileage in the low 20s at 60 mph+ ---your mileage may vary --- now I don't keep track and I usually don't fill all the way, 20$ gets me more than 100 miles of parades and local driving, I run the mixture on the lean side and use a lot of advance ---most times all of it

Re: range on a full tank of gas 10us gal

I never ran the tank dry, but DO keep track of my mileage - no matter what I do, I get 14 mpg (city driving - I won't take it out on the highway) - so whenever I get close to putting on 130 miles or so, I stop to fill up.

Re: range on a full tank of gas 10us gal

Depends on your driving, if you are getting 18 mpg, and you fill up with 10 gal's, your going to be walking in about 180 miles ;).

I would fill up aprox. every 150 miles :D.

Re: range on a full tank of gas 10us gal

Humble Opinion:

1. If you are second guessing Model A gas mileage, experience shows it varies based on so many factors, & there are far too many to list herein.

2. Suggest making a wood measuring stick, minimum size about 3/4" x 5/8" x 12" long, with the stick marked on one side with horizontal marks & numbers similar to markings on a tire gauge as follows, to indicate how many gallons are in your tank:

3. Measuring from the bottom of the 12" long stick at (O) gallons, the height for each added gallon of gas appears to be approximately as follows:

(1) gallon @ 1-1/2" from the bottom of the stick; (2) gallons @ 2-1/2"; (3) @3-3/8"; (4) @ 4-3/16"; (5) @ 5"; (6) @ 5-13/16"; (7) @ 6-11/16"; (8) @ 7-1/2"; (9) @ 8-9/16"; & (10) gallons @ 10-1/16" from the bottom of the stick.

4. Posted this about 6 days ago -- it was copied from another author in a former post -- asked a question about 1928-1929 tank measurements vs. 1930-1931 & received no reply -- it cannot be too far off if any.

5. Check gauge now & then while traveling long or short distances -- just an inexpensive simple marked wood stick that does not require a calculator at every stop, and beats walking 10 miles to the nearest gas station when one runs out of gas.

Hope this helps to prevent getting stranded on the highway with an empty tank.

I fill every 100 miles.

Appears to be far more accurate information in the recent replies in the former Thread entitled:

Gas Tank Measuring Stick

When planning long driving tours, I plan a fuel stop every 100 miles or so (determined by locations of stations, obviously). That handles even the lowest MPG cars in the group, while others only put in 5 or 6 gallons. And we all need a rest break around that time anyway!

On average our '30 Deluxe Coupe knocks out 20.4 mpg. My Dad was a banker so he loved his record keeping - must have rubbed off on we 3 lads as I do the same.

Be well -

You guys are hilarious!
I like the idea of a measuring stick. Simple and it works. I had one for my Model T years ago. Fortunately my gas gauge works in my Model A.

I agree. 100 miles (or 2 1/2 hours) is a really good number between tour stops. I always planned for a gas/bathroom stop every 80 to 100 miles for club tours here in the mountains.

I saw somewhere recently that Henry designed the gas gauge to read empty, whilre there was still 1 gallon of gas still in the tank, for me good for 18 miles.

I'm like Napa Skip, couple cups of coffee and stoppin soon,so gasoline never gets low.I knew one guy that ran a garden hose to the outside ,put a funnel on the end inside,he had an extra tank .

Many years ago,I used to get a minimum of 200 miles on a tank of gas,With the crap gas we have today,I get less mileage.

Unless I'm reading my tape wrong, I have the wrong tank. I measure a tad over 8inches deep, front side of the opening. What have I missed.

My dad tells a story on me when I was about 2 or 3 years old on a trip in his 29 Tudor: I followed his instructions and proceeded to fill up an empty coke bottle. All was well until I decided to empty it by just pouring it out the open window while traveling down the highway!

Skip, that was funny. You should have been a comedian.
Mitch, why spend the money.... an old Gatorade bottle works just fine!

Set the float at top of tank when guage says FULL and you won't have a problem. I got caught short on a hilly trip recently and added 10.429 gallons to my 1.5 gallon tank! I was coasting every downhill. And praying!

Re: range on a full tank of gas 10us gal

Wisdom from Pop: Sure the bounce in the gas gauge makes it a little hard to read, but when it STOPS bouncing, that's when you are really in trouble.

The one time that I looked and saw no bounce, I went straight to the nearest gas station. When I looked in the tank with a flashlight, there was nothing but a puddle the size of a half-dollar around the outlet to the shut-off valve.
