Default Is this a Model A engine and ...

Hello,

This is my 1st post. Hopefully you can get to the picuture with the following code below. If not I was able to get it on the gallery of picutures section. My question is this engine block a Model A. I could not find any numbers or letters on it. My other question if it is a Model A engine is that hole below the cam shaft hole suppose to be there or did it rust out creating a ragged hole there. Thanks for the help.

The serial engine number is found on the casting pad just above the water inlet on the left side center, just below the head gasket.

If you look on the opposite side you'll see the lower jacket water connection about mid way each way. Above this and just below the head/block juncture, you'll find a raised rectangle of the surface which is where the engine number is usually stamped.

Original Ford numbers usually begin and end in A (or possibly AA)

If the engine has been rebuilt, it could be the original numbers, the rectangle cleaned off with a grinder and new number unique to the rebuilder re-stamped, or nothing at all stamped.

Very early engines have the number rectangle expanded into a "medallion" shape. But this is not likely to be one of these.

Looks like fun.

In addition to what Joe said, engine numbers can also start with CA, CAQ, CAW, CAE, CAR, CAT, CAY, CAU, CAI, CAO, CAP, CAA, CAS, CAD. These were used on Canadian produced engines.

I must be living in a different world. All of the serial numbers I have seen (US production only) begin and end with a star. The second digit is A or AA but it does not repeat at the end.

Stars are not numbers. (Serial number?)

Of course A (or any other of the sequences above) are not numbers either.

But VERY unlikely for the state to record a "star" on your official entry for VID.

Maybe better for someone who has access to provide him a pix, or maybe seek one online?

We're all just trying to help, right?

Above the Water Inlet on the side of the Block you should find a Pad like in the photo below with a Number on it , unless they have been ground off.

The purpose of the "cracked" hole is to allow oil to overflow onto the timing gears.
