272 Y block informations

I ve find a 272 Y bloc , I don't know well this block , was is the problems or trouble with this engine , parts are available an expansive ? What auto box for higways recomanded ?
It's for my futur project .

The Ford Y-Block was a very reliable engine "back in the day" but even parts here in the States have gotten out of hand as far as cost.So first what is your future project? Does the 272 you found able to be run so you can hear and see if any problems exist? The more information you can post the more we can help you.

The 272 and later 292 Y blocks were very good engines with few exceptions.
The one big problem they had was the oiling system and the period in time that they were built.. 1954-64 in the states..
Many people were hung up on using non-detergent oil in their engines, the oil passages through the block/head became fouled with sludge, which the non-detergent oils created, and thereby minimized the flow of oil to the rocker arm assembly and other rotating assembly's.
The oil pans also did not have baffles in them, that caused the oil to move away from the pump pickup on curves and down slopes. This was indicated by the oil idiot light on the dash blinking.. I believe that this was called cavitation due to air entering the oiling system.
I have ran many Y blocks over 200k with no problems. I always used Castrol GTX 20/50.
Transmissions:
The Fordamatic (FMX) a two speed unit, is about the only automatic that will bolt right up to the engine... There is probably an after market vendor that makes adapters for the C-4 and other automatics.
Three speed transmission were the most common trans used on the Y-blocks.. The three speed with overdrive would be my choice for a highway car... The OD cars usually have a lower gear ratio than the non OD cars.
If you intend to drive the engine very much you will have to replace the valves and install hardened seats, the original valves/seats are not very friendly to modern fuels..
Hardened valves/seats are not necessary if you are only going to drive the vehicle a few thousand miles a year.

To add to what blucar states also along with the oil is the fact that they didn't have a PCV system and all the junk from combustion bypass ended up in the oil.

Also to clarify, early FOM were 3 speed automatics but when in drive started out in second unless floored. Also the FMX is not a FOM and is also a 3 speed

Another thing to note is that they were wide and heavy compared to small block Fords and Chevrolets.
