Tranny snap ring
Hi y’all
I have an early 28 Roadster which I’m restoring. I have a multi disc clutch. I’m in the middle of re-assembling the tranny. I am in need of the snap ring that goes on the main drive gear that holds the bearing, oil slinger and spiral grooved seal on the shaft. I have not been able to locate one any where. Does anyone have one they would sell, does anyone know where to find one, or does anyone know the dimensions of the snap ring so I can order one from someone on line? It is the only part I need to reassemble my tranny so I would be gratefully appreciative of any help y’all might offer. Thanks Mike |

Re: Tranny snap ring
Try Van Pelt's. They do early Ford trannys, but not generally Model A's. I'll bet he has something that will fit because a lot of the parts like the snap rings carry over into later years.

Mac is a great guy but if he does not have it, my go-to recommendation would be to Steve Becker out at Bert's Model-A since he specializes in Model-As. www.modelastore.com

Re: Tranny snap ring
The later green bible parts catalog call out P/N A-7045-A for the 1928 and it has a 1.43" ID for use with the multi disk clutch. The later part number A-7045-B with the 1.56" ID fits all the later ones with the single plate clutch.
The P/N A-7045-A was also used for the clutch throw out bearing on the multi disc clutch. The part may have just been the A-7045 on the real early 1928 cars. The input shaft is definitely different due to the way the plates mount up. The width of the snap rings can also be important. I certainly had no luck searching. The later part number is all that comes up. Mac VP has the most correct snap rings for the later model B &18 on up type transmissions. He may have a general source for snap rings like this but I don't know. McMaster-Carr has some spear end retaining rings but I don't know if any would work. |

Have you tried an industrial parts supplier, such as Graingers?

Re: Tranny snap ring
I have tried industrial suppliers but I don’t have measurements for the snap ring to order the correct size.

Re: Tranny snap ring
You need a few measuring tools if you own an antique car, they really come in handy.

Re: Tranny snap ring
The dimensions can be measured with a dial caliper from the groove that it fits on the input shaft. The depth of groove gives the ID and the width the thickness of the snap ring you need. A person may be able to modify other styles of outside type retaining rings as long as the size dimensions can be met.

Re: Tranny snap ring
Hi y’all
Thanks to Sam at Arizona Model A!! He located a snap ring for me and it’s omits way right now! What a great guy Sam is! Thanks to everyone! I am also looking for a tab lick washer for the pinion jam nuts that fits an early 28 drive shaft if anyone happens to know where I could locate one. Thanks y’all!! Mike |
