Working on my 35 truck I installed the 36 fuel/ oil gauge and every print on dash wireing tells ne the power is the top term. and the sending unit is the bottom. good luck with your project. Dave

Green wire goes to the top and yellow to the bottom on original wiring loom if its electrical and striped wire is for the oil gauge sending unit if you have the combo unit

A fabulous resource stored on the web at VanPeltSales.COM.

No No No, please don't do that. Here's the scoop: Looking at the gauge as it mounts in the dash, the power feed wire connects to the top terminal. This is usually a strap connecting the top terminal of the oil pressure gauge. The lower terminal on the gauge connects to the wire feeding the sending unit. This wire is grouped with the taillight wires and runs to the back of the car. Connect that wire to the center terminal on the sender. Although it was not needed when the car was new, it makes good sense to connect a grounding wire from one of the outer screws on the sender to a point on the frame. The sender needs a good ground and unless you provide one the system may or may not work. All connections should be clean and tight. |

Re: 1936 ford fuel gauge hook up?
Where does a resistor go in this setup if I have a 12v battery?

Re: 1936 ford fuel gauge hook up?
Put the resistor between the battery and the top terminal on the gauge

Re: 1936 ford fuel gauge hook up?
Why is it that when I put a 12 to 6v reducer on my 12v lead and test the output from the
other side of the reducer I still get 12v? That is the side that would go to my 6v gauge. Will it not burn up my 6v original Ford gauge? |

Re: 1936 ford fuel gauge hook up?
Try connecting the reducer to the gauges, and then measure the voltage.
A resistor limits current (flow), which then reduces voltage (pressure) down-stream of the resistor. When there is no current flow, there is no voltage drop. With the gauges connected and operating there will be current, so you should be able to measure the voltage drop. |

Re: 1936 ford fuel gauge hook up?
So I should be able to read the voltage drop at they're sending unit and not after the gauge
