A 1936 Ford on Michigan Ave. In Detroit & The History of the Traffic Light
These are just two of the many images that we have up in a post on The Old Motor, where you can learn all about the history of the traffic light. Last edited by t-head; 05-01-2013 at 07:14 AM. |

Take a good look at the street, winter time snow! The reason you don't see those vehicles any more is Detroit was built over a salt mine (no kidding), they use salt on the streets all winter long to make them more driveable.
Most of the vehicles rust out in less than 10 years. The salt spray gets into everything. Look how dirty the 1934 Ford is! Covered with salt sand slush. Born and raised there, Mark |

Not that it really matters much but, I believe the intersection of Michigan and Maple is not in Detroit. It is in West Dearborn near Greenfield Village (and also my old high school) .

Re: A 1936 Ford on Michigan Ave. In Detroit & The History of the Traffic Light
I Googled Michigan Ave. & Maple to locate area, I lived at Schaefer Rd. and W. Warren. The name printed on the green awning at that interscetion said East Dearborn. Good catch, wonder if it was Dearborn or Detroit when that photo was taken in the 30's ?
When I was driving in that area many times I didn't know or care what city I was in, most of it looked like Detroit to me. If I remember the street identification signs we a different background color from city to city. And they still hang the traffic signals in the center of the intersection that are very hard to see! Unless things have changed in the last 20 years. Mark |
