Dipsticks
I know I hve seen a graphic that shows the differences in dip sticks used for the Model A but cannot find it. I checked Judging Standards to no avail. Can anyone help?

Re: Dipsticks
I looked at the thread title, thought we might get a discussion about clueless drivers...

Re: Dipsticks
Thanks Gary. Where did you find this? I have since looked in the Ford Parts book and also only find one for the Model A.

Re: Dipsticks
I had the same question when I first got my Model A so I ended the puzzle by making my own mark.
I removed the oil pan and the inner baffle to clean everything out along with removing the valve cover and cleaned it out as well. I then added 5 quarts and ran the motor for a few minutes making sure there were no leaks. I then shut it off and after waiting for a 1/2 hour or so for the oil to drain back into the pan, I pulled the dipstick and used a small jeweler's file to cut a small oil level line into the dipstick. No more guess work and now I know exactly how much oil I have in the motor at anytime. Regards Bill |

Re: Dipsticks
BillCNC! Where is the mark you made relative to the "F" & "L"?

Re: Dipsticks
I change my oil every 500 miles. I do not have an oil filter.

Re: Dipsticks
I change mine every 500 miles which turns out to be once a month. I buy the 3 gallon box Rotella T4 15w-40 from Walmart for the same price of two 1 gallon jugs.

Re: Dipsticks
I put a partial flow filter on my daily driver truck and change my oil when it gets dark, if it doesn't get dark every 5000 miles. I use the cheapest 10w30 I can find, usually walmart oil. stock A's don't need high dollar oil, considering that they don't turn very fast, nor do they have high pressure valve springs.

Re: Dipsticks
Currently The Wretched Roadster leaks oil so successfully that the oil never gets dark.

Re: Dipsticks
Something to consider the next time you have your pan off and that is to drill a couple of small holes in each depression in the baffle. This will allow any oil remaining in the baffle to drain back to the crankcase.

Re: Dipsticks
I'm not sure that is such a good idea. Not much oil available for the rod bearings on start-up. Henry made the dipper tray like he did for a reason.

Re: Dipsticks
Y-Blockhead you are probably correct. I forgot about the dippers on the rod ends. This is not a pressurized oil lubrication system. My bad idea.

Re: Dipsticks
BillCNC, about 3/16" above the "F" on the dip stick is too much oil. Typically Model "A's" run about midway between the "L" and the "F".
