Default AA with banjo style rear axle

Guys,

I found this truck on Craigslist. I think the price is high, but I have seen very few of these trucks with this rear axle. It's not mine and I don't know who is selling it.

It is a 28 or early 29 with a worm gear rearend. Very slow but powerful.

I've heard of these 1929's with the bevel gear rear end but never seen one. I wonder what the ratio is. My 1928 AA has the "high speed" worm drive which is reportedly 5.14:1 and runs good up to about 45 MPH. But it sure would be nice to have a 4.5 or so to boost my unloaded speed.

Bigsnapper,

It isn't a worm drive rear axle. It's a banjo like the cars, but bigger. Quite uncommon.

Actually it was standard in the Early 1930 models.

This rear end was used after the worm type was phased out in late 1929 and before the new spiral bevel was started in 1930. This was used with the new style 20 inch disc wheels, including dual rear wheels. I have seen this rear end numerous times in late 1929 and 1930 AA trucks.

In the picture shown is a 29 beveled gear type axle D3. It was the 3 design axle for the AA that was released in early 29 for AA's with emergency brakes. This axle looks like an oversized A axle. (from the Judging Standards)
