Re: slightly off-topic but interesting......
I don't think I've ever seen anything go in that direction before. There is a Model A pickup around here with a 58 Mercedes diesel in it,he built it in 1963.There was a PV 544 Volvo with a 260 Ford in it,but it was wrecked a few years ago.I was in a hydraulic shop I use and walked by a 78 El Camino in the shop.It had a Ford engine in it.The owner said Ford couldn't make a car in that body style, and Chevrolet couldn't make an engine in any style. It was a 60's 302,stock,and got 20 MPG all around driving.

Re: slightly off-topic but interesting......
I know of an ongoing project that involves putting a blown Flathead V8 into a Corvette, just to P.O. the Chevy guys.

Re: slightly off-topic but interesting......
I went around the corner the other day and saw one of those old Corvair pickup trucks. I stopped and looked at it and it didn't look right. The giveaway was the big bump over the rear axle. Turns out that the guy took a V-8 GM LS front wheel drive transaxle, modified the suspension so it didn't turn, and installed it as a rear wheel drive in the Corvair. Other than that the truck looked stock complete with 60-year patina. It was a pretty cool project.

Re: slightly off-topic but interesting......
To replace the Chevrolet small or big block it came with and use a flathead V8 is amazing.. pull the cheap reliable horsepower and replace it with a crack prone, hot running, lousy power to weight ratio ford boat anchor is a fools errand

When I first got into antique cars back in the late 60's. The local Peterbuilt dealer also collected antique cars preferably Peirce-Arrows. He did have a late 20's Auburn Speedster with a diesel engine in it too.

The flathead V8 was a manufacturing triumph, to mass produce an intricate casting with 46 cores is a statement of the ability of Ford Rouge to overcome all obstacles..that being said, the flathead isn’t close to matching the small block by any measure.. that ford did it is admirable, but the actual product was marginal. |

Re: slightly off-topic but interesting......
Lanny .... I've looked at those two pictures for years. I also have one of an early Camaro with a flathead in it. I believe all three of these have been Photoshopped. The Camaro that I speak of and the '57 Chevy that you posted show the engine at an angle that would have the transmission output shafts about at ground level. In other words, both engines hang down too much in the rear. The silver/black '78 Corvette picture that you posted....no way that that hood is going to close over that generator, radiator hose and oil filter canister. But WTF do I know? Coop |

Lots of old cars in Cuba are running around with small diesels from boats and Soviet industrial engines. https://youtu.be/1v3LO6KXoWM

40mpg in a Model A. Of course right now diesel is half again the price of gasoline. I didn't replace my 2003 Golf TDI with another diesel for that very reason. The VW 1.6 diesels WILL burn waste automotive oil. I don't think I would try it in a TDI. Joe K

I had a 51 Hudson with a 351 Cleveland engine Dodge Aspin front clip, Ford Maverick rear end Cadillac tilt, telescopic steering column, Buick Riviera seats, 69 dodge flip gas cap. Talk about a mixed up car.
