Additional info to what Bill G posted

1. It is also possible to put 1/2 of clamp upside down and the other 1/2 right side up which does not work very well! The wider portion goes up against manifold and narrower goes down around the muffler flange.

2. Many of the REPRO mufflers have flanges (where muffler mates to manifold) that are smaller than originals. Aires repros fit better than most mufflers in this area.

I think that this is the "little piece of pipe" that Vern mentions:

EXHAUST SLEEVE
Part # A-5234 | Model Year 28-31
This little gadget slips between the muffler and the manifold to prevent leaks. Use with the A-5252 sealant. Due to manifold variations, it is sometimes necessary to cut a slit in the sleeve where it slips in the manifold. U.S.A.
$4.50 EA

Additional Information for those who may not know this:

Years ago Chris Pelikan found that using this pipe inside the connection restricts the exhaust and creates VERY high temperatures at the junction of the muffler and higher temps throughout the manifold.

The restriction causes a loss of power in addition to higher manifold temperatures.

Chris was working on why some carburetors were having problems with "Vapor lock" and why gasoline was boiling in the sediment bowl and inside the carb fuel bowl.
