Default Front Windscreen keeps blowing in

Hello fellow Barners,

Its recently needed cracked repaired on a windscreen stantion base on my pickup roadster..
Previous to this, the windscreen lower rubber and been glued shut, so the screen could not be pivoted open. But know that it is free to move, it folds inwards when driving at speed, no matter how hard I tighten the chrome wingnuts..
I am wondering if I am missing something??

Thank you in advance..

Had the same problem with a Phaeton. The stop gap fix was to put a piece of windshield rubber molding under it in the middle. Didn't take very much to stop it from blowing in at speed.

Is there any way to adopt the swing arms used in the closed cars?

With the bad reproduction stanchion cones it won't stay closed. A&L used to make good repros of them.

Hi Nkaminar,

I didn't realize the closed cars were different?? Do they have built in stops??

The closed car swing arms will not work on a roadster.

I made a stop from the middle screw to keep the windshield closed. To keep the windshield open I place a piece of rubber between the two.

For the closed cars, the stock swing arms did not have the notches. The ones with notches are an after market accessory. They work well but are you have to be able to manipulate both at the same time, which means you have to be seated in the car.

nkaminar- I believe that the 1928 did not have notches, but all after that did have notches. The notch is the "ideal" placement for the best ventilation.

I servo-taped a 1" steel corner bracket (painted black) onto the inside of each stanchion base, just below the stanchion pivot bolt, where the windshield frame can rest against it. Almost invisible, and removable. It probably prevents folding the windshield down, though.

A piece of adhesive-backed foam, like what comes with Shorai batteries, in that spot would probably accomplish the same thing, but would be more visible.

I have found that sometimes the wingnuts at the top of each stanchion bottom out on the studs before the nut has really locked the windshield tight in the cone.

A simple cure for this is to add a washer or two to the stud before tightening the wingnut. Try it. If it does not fix your problem, you can remove the washers and try something else.

That doesn't sound possible. Your gauge must be way off?

I agree with Jim. Had the same problem with my 31 and it turned out that the repro wing nuts were bottoming out before being tight. Don't know if it was poor quality repros or worn cones but a few extra stainless washer cured the problem. The other problem I had was that the stanchions would fold down too far when laying the windshield flat. A little bronze build up on the lower stanchion (the part with the stud in it) solved that problem.
