Default Axle key question

I am having trouble getting my hub on with a new axle key. I know the taper goes toward the inside of the axle, but does the key go into the keyway with the taper down or up?

Hi Bookaray,

With all due respect to tbird, I must beg to differ with him. If you are referring to the radius at the end of the key, that radius should go downward into the female radius in the axle created by the round cutter that created the keyway to begin with. Look closely at your axle, and you will see the radius bottom of the cut. Match the radius on the key to the radius in the keyway. Happy Motoring!

Thanks Chris and Sphanna. That is the reason I asked. I had been told the angle should be on top, but I can feel an upward angle at the axle end of the axle key channel.

Leave the key hanging out over the axle threads, a bit. Push the drum "home" & tap the key in flush.

If it is an AA rear hub you are working on, do not tap the shear key inwards or you may destroy the outer axle grease seal: https://richwhalen.smugmug.com/Appli...rear/i-9StWz3j

Just to add to the confusion, here's an old thread on the same subject that may be of interest:
