The Ford Barn

I went out to my favorite old car junkyard today, and was surprised, but not surprised. It is the only yard in about a 100 mile radius that had lots of Fords, and a yard you could still go in and pick what you wanted. Anyway, anything and everything that may have been good is gone. Nothing left of any use or value. I have pulled a lot of stuff out of there over the last 20 or so years, I have been a good and steady customer. I have shipped his parts all over the US, and a little to Canada also. So now truly what I have left is it. I never made a huge profit off of this stuff, but I had a lot of fun. (well, sometimes not) There is one yard about 200 miles away, and another about double that distance, it's too far to go, and the prices are set at the upper limit of e-pay sales, so no reason to go that route. It's kind of sad, but inevitable, nothing goes on forever I guess.

I guess its in the blood, but I had a blast with my son last time we went to the junk yard. Just don't have the funds to do it right now.

sadly that old iron will be sent overseas and turned into a Toyota or Nissan most of the yards around here are late model and picking your own parts is not allowed any of the old stuff goes to the crusher for the price of scrap so if you see it buy it as it might not be there next time

Hey packrat5 - where is this yard you're talking about? There is a yard in Eau Claire that still has a lot of old ford parts - most of them very rusty, but I've found some useful pieces. It's called Cooleys....

A few months back I read an obituary for a gentleman who had a yard I spent a lot of time in about 35 years ago. I thought of how places like his are just about gone. As I roamed his yard looking for parts I needed, I'd cringe at some of the pieces his employees would destroy if an effort to save time pulling another part. Very few guys saving the old iron today.

I know this is Irritating. There is an all Ford yard here that will be closing soon. And I know a woman who's husbands family has a yard that they closed in the 80's. I cannot get in! it is so irritating. Because I know the family has been talking about scraping everything out.

Sadly most of it gets gets turned into Chinese made crap tools.

Most of the old yards in my area are sadly long gone. If I were to come across a yard with the older veteran cars and trucks in it, I would go into hock to buy the business just to keep the history alive. Pick/Pull-A-Part yards have become popular here but few of them have any vintage vehicles. When I was a kid, Our family business had a couple of 55 Panels and even a 56 Vanette that I remember like it was yesterday...But I digress,not to mention depressing myself......age.

I have one old yard locally but I have gotten just about everything I can get out of it but its still nice just to walk around to get some exercise.

All my favorite yards have nothing but plastic cars in them now. Just like old people, the old car junkyards are fading away.
But the cars that have been sitting there for decades without generating any money for the yard owner will inevitably be turned to scrap to pay the bills and taxes. We had better buy the stuff or the owners will have no other choice but to get rid of it and bring in stuff that sells.
