Re: charging

I have digital and analog meters and use both. My Fluke digital was purchased to adjust voltage output on aircraft 24-volt systems so they would charge at 28-volts. The fluke was the most accurate...

Re: What water pumps do I need?

FWI, the 37 through 48 pumps will bolt up to the engine but they only work well when the whole front of the motor is converted to early style. This also requires the early style cam and gearing to...

Re: Looking for a quality 6 Volt Starter

1 gauge or larger cable is what 6-volt systems like for starter motors. Heat related problems can sometimes be an open in an armature winding. They will pass current until it expands from engine heat...

Re: Henry and Edsel again

That delivery certainly had all the bells and whistles. Dual chrome plated horns and dual windshield wipers plus chrome hub covers. That was quite a delivery van.

Henry and Edsel wer always around...

Re: How many miles should spark plugs last?

How long the electrodes last depends on what they are made from. The resistors are another fail point in plugs so equipped. If you purchase iridium electrode plugs then the resistor will likely be...

Re: Grease in 2-tooth

Some folks use John Deere corn header gearbox grease for it's thixotropic nature. It is fluidic when parts move in it but more of a jell state when parts are at rest. It is a brownish color so that...

Re: How do I test field coils in a starter?

Starter motors are shunt wound with heavier guage wire in order to get a really good torque output. By changing to series wound fields, it just reduces the torque capability. The original fields on...

Re: Ballast resistor for 12V coil

Most 12-volt systems are regulated to 13.5 to 14-volts when the alternator or generator is in function. A 6-volt system should run at around 7.1 to 7.2-Volts.

Re: Ballast resistor for 12V coil

The built in resistor is a misnomer that I see a lot. It just has more resistance in the primary coil. The higher resistance primary makes more heat but modern internal insulation is a specific epoxy...

Re: Borg Warner overdrive question

The rail switch opens the circuit to the ground action of the governor so the main solenoid can't operate electrically. The rail also blocks the pawl so that it can't move mechanically. This is the...

Re: Ballast resistor for 12V coil

A 1.2 to 1.5 Ohm ballast resistor will work for a 1.5 Ohm primary type coil. A person can use a 3 Ohm primary type coil and not need a ballast for 12-volt conversion.

Re: Borg Warner overdrive question

The firewall relay powers the system up when the key is turned on. The system uses the governor ground to complete the circuit at the moment it reaches on speed. The downshift switch under the gas...

Re: Removing the dash

If the wire harness is sourced from Bauer Electronics through one of the mid century Ford sources, they come with an excellent wiring diagram for each harness assembly in the set. Mac VanPelt has...

Re: Disc brakes for wide-5 drums

It might not be very practical to do a set up like that for the Ford wide 5. It could be done with adapters but it would change back spacing on the wheels. The adapters would have to clear the...

Re: 37 coupe RTS T-170 swap!

This alteration has been done a fair amount for folks that want an overdrive with a top shift. The Tremec T170 RTS-TOD has now been out of production since 1987 and they really only had a three year...

Re: Removing stuck distributor and lower shaft

I use LPS-3 on the shafting before I reinstall. It helps prevent corrosion.

Re: Light Switch Rotary Plates: 1928, 29-31, and a Mystery Plate:

Re: Light Switch Rotary Plates: 1928, 29-31, and a Mystery Plate:

Ford used the steering wheel switches up through 1939 so there are likely other variations. The MAFCA electrical PDF document shows the ones used in the model A era.

Re: Horn

There is a kit available from model A sources to repair for deteriorated horn rod internals. A volt/Ohm meter is the best way to test the horn rod assembly.

Re: NGK Anti - Seize?

Re: Exhaust manifold intake bolts broke

Alexiskai mentioned the first thing I always check. If a manifold has excessive droop then it's not worth trying to repair it. I had a drooped manifold and a cracked intake so I tried out a new set...

Re: Ammeter showed a discharge

A high amp discharge indicates a complete loss of generator output. If it has a short to ground somewhere then it will blow a fuse if so equipped. Something may be getting hot due to a loose...

Re: Removing stuck distributor and lower shaft

The one piece was an early item and there would be no sign of the coupling that the two piece fits. The area that the distributor shaft rides in is problematic with corrosion being caused by...

Re: Old brazed repairs on a 21 stud

One thing I learned about brazing cast iron is that it will stay more structurally sound in the joint if the brass overlaps the crack. It needs a blanket coating to help it stay attached. I've none...
