Default 1935 6V Battery Help Needed

Can anyone recommend a 6V battery that will fit a '35? I have heard that the Optimas, now made in Mexico, are not that reliable. Interstate does not have one that will fit, too tall. It can't be over 71/4" high or the terminals hit the cover plate. What do you guys use? Thanks, Mike

Otima , , you will have to lay it over on its side , hurts nothing as its a gell cell. I have had one in my stock 36 for 5+ years , never use a battery tender & it can sit for 4 months & then it spins it over like a 12volt till she gets fuel & then starts right up.
I wouldnt consider anything else nor would I consider switching to 12 volts.
Cheers
Tony

Optima with homemade battery box that fits in original '35 mounting without any other modifictions. I can remove this and replace with a stock lead acid size battery in 10 min. if I chose to. This is in an original fordor FB sedan Rouge class car that I drive a lot. I don't really care about points that may be lost at an EFV8 Club Meet. This may not be the most beautiful setup you have ever seen but it's very functional and works well for me.

Another option for a lead acid script 2LF battery that will fit your stock '35 battery box is from Antique Auto Battery in Hudson, OH at ~ $300.00.

I like it.

I got a battery for a old VW bug and it fits fine. It was the only 6 volt in town when I needed it and it starts the old truck if it's not too cold. Cheep too.

Napa 7224D works for me in the 36 and the 28.

I have an Optima that works very well to, but not cheap.

I did the same type of set up as JM in my 35 Touring Sedan. Works great and I never intend to use a lead Acid battery in my old cars again ! Optima is the way to go. JMHO .Kerk

Here's an original style Ford script tar-top 6 volt battery with 570 cold cranking amps. It's 10-1/2" Long 7 Wide 7-7/8" High so it appears that it would fit your car. It's a bit pricey at $230.00 but if you want the real look that also works this could be it.

Or, you can get the taller Optima Top Post 750 CCA 6 Volt Battery for $165.00 here: http://www.amazon.com/Optima-Top-Pos.../dp/B0007ZFT04 and modify your battery shelf for it to fit as previously described and illustrated or lay it on its side as KiWinUS suggested.

Bugs me to keep throwing away those ford script lead acid batteries every 3 plus years when my Optima installed in July of 2001 is still going strong. I'm all done with lead acid batteries now. Will never go back!

As far as the 6 volt optima goes, it may interest you to know that a 7.62mm x 200 cartridge ammo box makes a perfect fit battery case for an optima 6 volt battery.

There is a New Battery Cover available that will allow the use of the taller Optima battery and will be hardly able to be noticed. kerk

Yes Kerk, that New Battery cover is made by Larry Cossar. It sits up higher than the floorboards so you can get a taller battery in. You should be able to contact him at [email protected]

I am very happy with my Optima. I bought a plastic case made to install the Optima inside. Has a Ford script on side. An expert would know better but the average guy thinks it is the real thing!

When I researched what an optimum battery is. What I read is that it is lead and sulfuric acid. Is that different then gel. They did not say optima were gel.

Here's the boxes I made for a 35 roadster and a 34 P/U. The 34 box attached to the X member allows plenty of room for dual exhaust which I elongated the hole in the frame like the right side so the left exhaust go's through the frame like the right side. I don't like the exhaust below the frame. The one in the 35 roadster fits in nice and a solenoid is mounted to the side of the box with short heavy battery cables. The 35 shows the cheap green battery disconnect which has since failed and replaced by a heavy duty disconnect from Bob Shewman [email protected] G.M.
